Transmission installation

The car is an 88 S4 N/A and the problem is this: I just put my new clutch in and am now trying to get the transmission to go back in. I can get it within about an inch of being in place but it just won't go all of the way on, I was just wondering if anyone had any tips or ideas on how to get this thing in. Thanks.

If the splines line up, I got mine back in by push and wiggle.

make sure your shifter is off. I like to tilt the front of the engine up to get the tranny mated because the top fo the bellhousing is hitting the tranny tunnel, so u dont get it lined up well

Something you can try is taking the stock spare tire jack and put that under the engine against the pulleys to tilt the engine up a little, may be easier to line up the tranny that way. I know I'm probably describing it wrong but I've seen it done before.

Take your Engine and Loosen the Engine mounts from the Bottom a Touch.then TILT your Engine,so that the Engine is HIGHER at the front and the rear of the Engine is tilted DOWN like two inches, three inches..It will make Putting in the Transmission SO much easier...(when I replaced my Clutch,I put a 4x4 Block of wood inbetween the Rad shroud and the Engine.NOT real Safe or Smart,BUT it did work!)..and Don't forget to Tighten up the Engine mounts once you have the Transmission On the engine.

I danced a jig and wiggled the bejesus out of it and it popped right in. It was a severe amount of jiggling. I kept getting within an inch, but then increased the jiggling and it slid in. I know that sounds ridiculously mad, but that's how I got mine back in.

What is worse is doing it backwards. Putting engine in while tranny is mounted. A few of my buddies done it and gave me tips. I hated it. Im more used to doing clutch jobs and jiggling the tranny. Try jiggling the engine. I ended up taking out my tranny to mate with my engine, then installing everything together.

I had more trouble doign what thread start says. Putting the engine in with the tranny alreayd in was easier due to the fact I wasn't bench pressing a tranny while jiggling the crap out of it!

I just did this recently and I couldn't get but within a half inch on the bottom and about an inch at the top. Once I was that close, I started putting the bolts in. I put the bottom ones in first and tightened those a bit. Don't get them too tight, just enough so that you can put the top transmission bolts in and then tighten those.

I got really really close to getting it to fit. I didnt want to bring it in with bolts because I was scared of damaging the pilot bearing.

ANother thing I did wrong was that I was trying to do this for about 45 minutes with my engine balancer hitting the firewall. I probably would have gotten it in if I wasnt so tired after pushing it for so long with the balancer in the way.

Lifting the tranny helped, but I was still unsuccesful doing it by myself.
