Transmission Input Shaft

I have an 88 rx7 n/a. The tranny input shaft needs to be replaced. How hard is this? How is it done? Is there anywhere I can get a a parts breakdown? I really don't want to pay for someone else to do it if I can do it myself.

factory service manual should have it. I downloaded a FSM from this site. On the left, click on How To. In new menu that drops down, click on Manuals. Then select 86-88 FSM, or what ever year car you have. They are in PDF format, and each chapter is 1 file.

Riiight, the input shaft is worth like 400 bucks. I was told by a tranny company. They said if you get a used tranny the input shaft alone is worth 400

Why do you need a new input shaft?

I would not expect the shaft to cost $400. I bought a new main shaft (from mazda) for much less than that (seems like $70 or $100 can't rememeber).

You will have to open the trans up to get to the input shaft out. Wouldn't expect it to be too bad.

Thaniel,

The pilot bearing completely disintegrated and in the process wore the input shaft down about .003.

Maybe he is quoting 400 for the whole job of replacing the input shaft.

You have to tear the whole transmission down. It's a pain in the *** if you have gear pullers, a big hydraulic press, etc. Near impossible if you don't have such lovely tools.

Thanks for the heads up

thanks for the head up peejay,

The jury is still out. If I can do the job and buy the tools for the same or less than I can hire the job done, then I win. Remember he who dies with the most toys wins. I, for one am working on just that.

Thanks all for your help

To:

Project84, Thank you very much, that was a great help.

DC350, The main shaft from the local Mazda dealer was $126 and change. I don't know about installation.

banzaitoyota, I think you are correct.

CrankheadMel, I think NOT.
