Unhappy transmission.....help please......

alrite, i REALLY would appreciate some help diagnosing a problem...my transmission smoked a LOT and still leaks oil all over the inner boot of my shift housing. my outter boot is ripped to peices so the insulation peices are almost soakin in tranny oil and the visible boot (which is red) is slowely turning dark red and getting oil all over it. When im sitting still for a while idling (tonight i was pickin my bro up from work) and it started to smell bad, so i took off the housing and SMOKE WAS EVERYWHERE! it really smells too, im takin it to AAMCO tomorrow and my mom said she'll pay up to 300 for repairs since the smell was there when i bought the car in august. do you think a seal is broken, do you think the tranny is busted? There seems to not be too much problems at all with grinding or slipping. car runs fine. the only time i grind the gears is when im accellerating at full throttle from first gear and slam it into 2nd and i hear a loud "CSHHRRRSSHH" (haha..bad sound..but its a grinding sound)

what do you all think..... =(

I think you have an automatic and it has been over filled. or you have a manual and its using the wrong tranny oil.

If you have a manual its normal for the first/second gear synco to start to grind a little with age. You can either replace the synco's or double clutch (which I recommened on down shifts anyway).

4 to 6 hours...

Its not the cost of the syncros (they are relatively cheap) its the cost of ripping apart the tranny

Transmision problem!!

Something sure sounds fishy? I`m not too sure about taking it to AMCO as their job is to fix transmisions an they are likely to say anything!! Only if you know the people that work there!!

I don`t think that it`s your transmision that is smoking, I`d rather think that oil from someplace else is getting on your exhaust system and causing the smoke!! It would be my guess that it`s the O rings at the base of your oil filter mount. Not the oil filter itself, but there is a mount that the oil filter mounts to. The name slips me for now! If you have a way of jacking up your car safely {and use jack stands} look under your car befor you take it anywhere!! If it is your tranny smoking, then its too late. I don`t think a standard trans could take that kind of heat and not be wasted!!

Hope it`s not terminal, but I don`t think that it is!!!!!!

took it already......

i took it already, and i got 2 diagnosed problems. well..the smoke coming out of the shift box was white (oil as anyone would suspect..) but the smell wasnt of motor oil like the smell of the engine starting up w/ smoke coming out the back, the smell was a stinky transmission oil smell, or at least the tranny oil I had, because i replaced the shift boot/bushings and when i took out the shift ****, the tranny oil smelled exactly like the burning oil. also, after putting the bushing on the damn thing, there was STILL OIL leaking into the shift housing (couldnt of come all the way from the oil pan and drained down the tranndy up to the housing i dont think.

well the first problem was that the shift (bushings, gasket, seal) was dead on my tranny, alrite i thought thats fine, and they also said that the rear seal to the driveshaft was leaking. They took out the driveshaft, and 'told' me that the yoke was damaged along w/ the u-joints..suspiciously they seemed 'disappointed' i wouldnt spend 580 bux on a new drivetrain, since the ujoints are irreplacable. im buying another one for 100 bux from demonracer on this list. trust me, when i get it put in, im definatley going to inspect the crapped out drivetrain myself and if it appears to have no problems, im suing those bastards in any way i can...(u can find a legal reason for everything ). all in all im paying 250 bux for them to put new seals on the shifter part of the tranny (tired of saying more technical stuff...) and for them to take the driveshaft off and back on...this pisses me off..there goes the spring money .

Why don't you do the work yourself and save your "spring money"? Changing a driveshaft is very easy and the seals on the tranny..... someone on the forum should be able to walk you through that one. This way you learn a lot about your car and you save yourself a bunch of money.

Don't need any fancy tools to replace the shifter seals or the rear trans seal (where the drive shaft connects). I replaced them on mine without much trouble. (did the rear seal on my bros jeep saturday in about an hour).

580 for a drive shaft is outragous.

For the shifter seals, go to the Mazdatrix site and then to the self help section. They tell you exactly how to do the shifter bushings. It is ridiculously easy once you are in there. You do need new bushings and boots though, probably about $60 or so when you are all done and said and you ordered it from the dealer (Trussville Mazda on the web, discount prices). Remember, white hard bushing on the bottom, soft blue bushing on top.
To take out your driveshaft, you need a crowbar to hold the yoke and 14 mm socket for the nuts which are gorilla'd on. I did that in a junkyard on my back as well. Might have to drop the exhaust back half. Easy again.
On the transmission rear seal, someone else has probably done it.
Not worth your money to have someone else do it.
