Angry Transmission explodes

It all started with my day off and my friend wanted me to take him to check up on his T2 thats in the shop. So we are driving along and then my car starts to vibrate when I floor it. so I decide to head home and grab my moms car, right after I hit a U E I give it gas change lanes and then boom the shifter collapses and Im thinking my transmission has some how dropped. I then pull over and get out of the car and the driveshaft is on the ground but still connected to the diff. then I hear parts of metal sliding down the road, the very back of the transmission has shattered all over the high way. Does anyone know what could of caused this because I sure dont know.

The good news is that I bought a T2 and the body and interior from the explosive car is going to the T2 and the motor is getting rebuilt. So if anyone would be interested in a N/A motor with less than 30K on it header exhaust and ported intake with TB mod, very clean make an offer you could have the car(whats left of it bodywise and interior) and motor together for... just make an offer. I need money bad so I can get back on the road.

did it grind gears when you were driving? Something in the drivetrian probably locked up and when it couldn't spin it broke, I've heard this happening before usually with high power cars when they miss gears on very high gears and start to grind gears in the transmission. Sounds like the point where the drive shaft and the rear transmission connects locked up. sorry to hear that I would be super pissed if that happed to me.

What ever the hell it was, it was major.

I dropped my automatic, before I converted it to manual, into park at 100mph.

It locked up the back tires, and I thought, it's dead. but it wasn't. as I was costing, because that killed the motor, I restarted and went on my merry way. Two weeks latter the trany blew.

I know you're thinking, how the hell do you put it in park when driving. well, when I bought the car, the safty for the auto trany's shifter was broken, didn't lock. So the tranny did at 100.

I believe the auto's have a splined gear and a locking pin, called the parking pawl, to engage parking. When you put the transmission in park, a pin engages into the gear teeth on the output end, preventing the car from rolling. Usually what breaks during your experience is the pawl itself, and rarely the transmission output, thus killing any ability to keep the car from rolling in park save the parking brake.

At least that's how it is on fords (I rebuild AOD's, C4's, and C6's). It will be the same or similar on Mazda's, I'm sure, as clutch band pressure can not be maintained without the engine running, and thus something mechanical must be used. (yes, your automatic has clutches.)

I am surprised your transmission went... maybe it was coincidence? Do you know what went on it? What do you mean by "went"?

I was going to guess seized bearing, but the vibration makes me skeptical. Maybe a slightly bent rod, and when the rpms got up, the rod let go, it took out some other parts, and twisted the casing? Can't really tell without opening up the old tranny. Can you get pics of the damage?

Regardless, this is a rare problem.
