Transmission burning too much gear oil

Not like i'm complaining. i have an endless supply of gear oil but it is rather annoying to check it all the time.

I have a TurboII with 142,000 miles. 2 and 3rd gear grid when downshifting regardless if i doubleclutch, put it in slowly or wait til the rpms drop to 1k rpms. Weither that has anything to do with it. I don't know.

today i thought there was an electrical fire or something becuase there was a little whisps of smoke coming from somewhere. i finaly get home to look at it and the smoke was coming straight from the shift boot, kinda like a chimney.

anyways i've owned the car for a month now and have nothing everything on a small budget to treat it good and since i've gotten it i've had to put gear oil into the tranny twice.

Need a new tranny or is this normal? i put the gear oil that is stated underhood in there, i can't remmeber what it is right now.

First off, check your front and rear seals. Maybe they're just leaking and everything is OK with the tranny. Rear seal is easy enough to inspect, just look at the area where the driveshaft meets the tranny. Front seal will be a little harder, but if it's leaking there at least should be some oil at the front of the tranny, and maybe some clutch slippage.

on my turbo II there was an inspection plate right in the center of the bottom of the transmission, gears shouldn't grind if you rev match your rpms before engagement to what they will be after engagement. i've never heard of burning gear oil, there is no combustion hapening inside the transmission, and no its not normal by my standards. good luck with it.

actualy about 70% of the time i do rev match and it still grids. perhaps it's still the stock mazda clutch and its just bad. there is a lot of play in the clutch petal.

Since I have access to a lift I was able to do some looking around and there is a large amount of oil on the buttom of the car. i figured that the motor was about to go and thats the rear rotor seal. maybe it is the tranny.

but on another subject the car does smoke when i'm going up hill and i havn't decided when it actualy happens.. when i downshift into 4th or i get into boost in 5th. i'm really not sure.

I'm not really familiar with RWD cars since my daily drive is a Protege. the plate where the shifter is at is where you put the oil in right? and how full should it be?

-therotaryrocket - That was really funny. I didn't mean burning oil.

Once you find the leak and get it fixed (BTW, the two seals I was talking about are both on the tranny, NOT talking about the engine rear seal here), try another tranny fluid, like Redline MT-90, and your synchro problems may disappear...

The shifter area is NOT where you refill the tranny at. There will be fill and drain plugs on the side of the tranny...

Actullly, you do need to put some oil in the extension housing (shifter hole).

wanna hear something funny.

well went to change the oil in the car and look at it while i'm down there. the wire coming from this module connected to the tranny was shorting and thats why it was smoking. unfortunately i believe those are the wires the register the oil pressure, boost, engine temp, gas tank and tach. but i unplug those both and no more smoking but none of the above work. i guess i'll go and find a parts car or something.

But i believe i'm going drain all the tranny fluid and put in the Redline 80w-90 anyways. if that can help the griding of gears then that is awesome.
