Tranny upgrade

I've done some searching on this forum and am unable to find a thread on this.

I have my '86 GXL 5 speed and need to either rebuild my tranny or install a new one.

I was looking for a step up but have no idea what my options are and where to find them. A yahoo search got me to some rebuilds but that's not really what I"m looking for.

So the questions are, what tranny's are available for this car, any idea where I can get one? I also want to replace the clutch for a step up but need to know if any clutch that is compatable with the car will work with a different tranny?

Not a turbo tranny, just something better and more reliable then the S4 tranny. Nothing aftermarket?

mazda motorsports(you have to be a member to view prices) has a racing gear set that uses the stock housing for like $3,100. I can post the ratios and how to join if you want

too rich for my blood. Just looking for a stock replacement. Figure as often as these go out, it would be wise to have one ready to drop in.

you can use the turbo II tranny's , you'll need a clutch , fylwheel from a turbo II and we use the front yoke off a turbo and mate it to the n/a drive shaft

I believe you can still use the N/A clutch, flywheel pressure plate, you have to use the N/A starter for the flywheel mesh... also you must use the TII tranny crossmember support bracket
