Tranny Swap Question (Not asking How To)
Tranny Swap Question (Not asking How To)
Ok, i was just wondering if it's a good idea or not to swap out the rediculously boring auto tranny in my vert with a manual tranny from an '88 n/a? I already know the parts needed and the prices estimated in total cost and labor. Search button does help, but it doesn't answer this question.

Well if you already know the cost of parts and labor then I think you just need to decide if that much $$ is worth having a 5 speed....no? Personally, I'd do anything for a manual, but maybe thats just me.

Yes, it will, go for it, an automatic sucks all by itself, but an automatic vert, thats really gotta suck! Just get the parts and do it, should be done in less than 4 days if you spend a couple hours a day on it!

Ive seen this question several times. Photograph it adn document everythign you had to do for the rest of the guys adn gals out here who are wanting to do the same thing to thier cars.
However I would swap a T2 tranny into it cause eventually you'll want more power in you vert and the NA tranny wont handle more than 225hp or so.

Man that sounds like a crapload of work for a vert... IMO it would not be worth it.. especially if this is your daily driver.... Sell the vert.. Get a GTU or turbo 5speed.. and lay tread on the ground...
Its not all the much work. I did it in one full saturday on my 87 N/A. Whats even better is, I comute in my daily driver N/A ... so with the gear ratio of the automatic rear end I get even better gas milage with the 5 speed. It will eventully pay for itself.

There isn't a difference that I am aware of between the tranny's, but regardless, the automatic -> manual swap is definately worth it, regardless of what car. And don't you dare say sell a vert to get a GTU, hell no!
hell no, i will not sell my vert for anything. Sure a T2 is nice for speed and all, but that doesn't mean i'm going to sell my vert for one. It's south florida, the weather's nice... I like to ride with the top down. Besides, a tranny swap is NOT a crapload of work when you compare it to such things as doing an N/A to a Turbo conversion.

NA to Turbo is exactly what I did, successfully too, until I found out the engine I was using had no compression in the front rotor
A tranny swap is definatly worth it, it's relatively easy, not too difficult, and it's extremely worthwhile afterwards! Just remember to disconnect the AT computer on the passanger kick panel, and to run a line to the starter solonoid while you are down there!

well.. To do an auto to manual swap, You have to Acually swap trannys , get it mounted right.. Then Setup the clutch , and clutch pedal...
I've never done it so I'm not saying I know what I'm talking about, But it sounds like a crapload of work to me
As for not selling your Vert.. I can understand
nice weather with a nice vert sounds cool.. but I (myself) HATE ragtop cars, and IMO sevens aren't great daily drivers (please no flames
I drive mine daily right now... ) I don't care how comfortable or nice looking my seven is, my money goes towards performance and maintenance parts... I'm not rich enough to have a nice looking seven
and any car that has a rotary in it ROCKS

It's not hard, trust me. I had the pedals all done in about 2 hours (took me forever to get the steering column out. It's relatively easy. You may want to ask hypntyz7 for some info on the mounting you will need, or check out his website (i forgot the address) Just don't say I reffered you, cuz he's about to kill me at the moment. Yes, I'm sorry hyp, I'm broke off my *** at the moment, and I'm trying to scrounge up the money to pay you back. I'll pay you back with interest, so don't worry too much, it will get to you!

I made the mistake of buying an auto 'vert, too. Damn I hate that tranny.
I keep dreaming of swaping in a tII tranny, and getting a supercharger or Nitrous.
But it's dreaming. I don't have a TII parts car sitting around (or even a permanent residence right now).
From what I read it is totally worth it. If you have the donor tranny and driveshaft, why not do it? The only thing you need are the pedals and hydraulic pieces, should be easy to get.
Making the bracket like hypntyz7 did is the best solution I've seen for the mounting problem.
But if your daily drive is in traffic, you might consider keeping the auto. The only time I like the damn thing is rush hour.
I was looking for a cheap tII to scratch my speed fix, I see you already got one (though AE's are hardly cheap).

my daily driving isn't much in traffic since i go to work before rush hour comes around and get off work at 1 a.m. And other than that, traffic isn't unbearable around where i live in fort lauderdale.
