tranny questions

well i was driving last night and i heard the kind of squeel that would get louder when i was driving. i would depress the clutch and then it would go away. i look at a few thread and they were saying that it was the t/o bearing. my question is, if the tranny fluid is low would it cause it to do that? also it is a s4 tranny. if that would solve it what parts would i need to fix it.

The T/O bearing could be the problem, but it's kind of a long shot.

I'd look at the tranny:
Drain, check for debris, check the rear seal, refill with synthetic gear oil.

See it that helps..

so then i shouldn't take the tranny off. just check and drain the tranny fluid and then check the rear seal.

Hopefully it's something minor - I'd start there..

If you take the tranny out ... dont forget to check and replace the pilot bearing .. even it it doesnt look bad, they are cheap, but the pullers are hard to come by and using a screwdriver will most of the time end up in the needles of the bearing getting chewed out ... I haven't personally seen one go bad, but If excessive dirt or debris gets in there I am sure one would wear out fairly fast...

also check the input shaft for scarring ... overall... pulling a tranny in a rex is easy ... getting the splines lined back up is a pain 60% of the time, so best to have two people there for reinstallation ...

When the gears break in the tranny normally you wil hear a clicking sound as it chews through the rest of the gears, from your description it doesnt sound like the problem, at this point I am still leaning toward a warped or frozen Push out bearing ... but S4 tranny's are probably the weakest tranny's out of the bunch, not only because their synchro's go bad fast under "spirited driving" but because the tensile strength of the gears dont match the amount of pressure the engine can "possibly" put the gearing under ...

Oh, and another thing - you didn't specify where you heard the squeeling from, but, check the AC and PS Idlers and lube them cause they rust, and make sure they are not overtightened, some peopel do this unknoingly when they change the belts... sometimes the clutch fan can squeel when it is starting to go bad, but that would not be noticed until a very hot day...

Water pump can squeel also as the bearings go bad, but it *should* if its not a crappy water pump, weep underneath it. I had a squeel back in my newb days that started under the hood, I had only had the car for 2 weeks, and I snapped the water pump shaft in half sending the fan into the radiator to let the fan belts cut grooves in it ... it was not a pretty picture ... but a lesson well learned ...

they also have the ever so fine gpsports kit on sale for 1800.

thanks for the replies. i went and talked to my friend that has a civic with an integra swap and also a 90 mr2. he said that his mr2 has the same sound and that it is perfectly normal. so just for peace of mind i am going to just change the fluid. thanks for the help guys.
