Tranny Oil Change
Tranny Oil Change
Hey everyone
I just picked up an 89 T2, and i wanted to do all the fluids, just as a general maitnence thing for buying a new(used) car.
I did a search bit didn't find what I wanted
Can someone please tell me how much oil the tranny takes? and what kind does everyone reccomend?, I was planning to use redline shockproof 75w90 or royal purple.

from drain to fill it takes 2.6 quarts and 80W90 works just fine. you'll have to drain the trans oil from the two lower plugs and fill the trans oil in the top front most plug until the oil level reaches the bottom of the top rear most plug hole. you'll see what i'm talking about once you get under the car. if you need further explanation, i can post a pic of what i'm talking about
Most store bought GL5 gear oils can be damaging to synchros if over additized or under buffered. This is the problem with using GL5 gears oil in a manual transmission. Use that in the rearend.
For a manual tranny, Royalpurple makes a decent GL4/GL5 75w90 Maxgear oil.
Redline MT90 and Amsoil MTG are GL4 75w90 gear oils which would be my 1st choice.
Redline 75w90NS, Motul Gear300, and Synlube can also be used for manual transmission usage.
For the rearend, make sure you stick with a GL5 fluid. If you're modded for more power, I would consider stepping up to a 110wt or 140wt for better 'end protection.

I used MT90 in the tranny and love it. I used whatever redline fluid was the right type for the diff, I forget the name.
If you don't have a loval shop that carries it, I got mine from www.myoilshop.com. They had good prices and good service.

This may be obvious, but make sure you get the upper (check) plug out before removing the (lower) drain plug. If for any reason the check plug is stuck and you need to get a longer wrench, etc., it is better to find this out before you've emptied the tranny.
I went with Royal Purple myself. Basically I read forums with some users who posted their results after trying a tranny oil. They found some reduced grinding (e.g., Mobil 1), some allowed for faster shifts (e.g., Redline), but only Royal Purple and Neo did both. Maybe redline allows even faster shifts than RP/Neo, maybe not. I dunno. But for me the shifts w/ RP might as well be instant they're so quick. So w/ that plus reduced grinding, I like it. I had another RX-7 w/ Neo and it's just as good.
Oh, and a length of plastic hose that will fit snug over your funnel is handy. That'll let you fill the oil from the side of your car or from the engine bay. It's helpful to have 1 person pouring in the oil, and another under the car. The person under the car holds the tube in and tells the pouring guy when to stop. Trying to fill it from underneath the car doesn't work so well unless you have some kind of squirter.

less than 5 quarts for tranny and diff... I think it was around 4ish but I went with neo synthetic and I'm satisfied ... did feel a little difference but I'll probably try something else the other time around. good luck

so redline and royal purple lets you shift mad quick yo?
Are there different oil weights for different diffs? Like the S4's clutch type vs the S5's viscous type vs the FD's torsen?

No, only a properly working transmission lets you shift 'mad quick yo'.
Most shifting issues related to the fluid are caused by the incorrect fluid or excessive usage of that fluid. The rest of the issues are caused by wear and tear from years of abuse and neglect.
The owners manual and factory service manual covers the weights well enough.
Weight isn't an issue with diff types. LSD-additive amount is an issue with diff types.

Yes, redline, royal purple and neo all help you shift quick. The difference was extremely obvious both when I switched to Neo in my first RX-7 and when I switched to RP in my current RX-7. And several other users can attest to the same, and an info sheet from Redline explains why. These oils slip out from between the syncros and mating surfaces faster so the two meet together quicker. So in theory emptying your tranny of everything but air would also let you shift real quick, you'd just ruin your tranny.
Check the owner's manual or Haynes manual or FSM (in the FAQ) for recommended oil weights for the tranny and differential. Make sure the tranny oil you use is safe for synchros, and that the differential oil you use is safe for LSD's (otherwise you need to put an additive in the differential oil). For Royal Purple you'd use Synchromax in the tranny and Max Gear in the diff.
