Exclamation Tranny issues, help....

ever since the clutch was installed on my car i've noticed downshifting into 3rd it grinds now and then, now more then then though, whats going on, is there a lack of gear oil in there, or the wrong kind?...

should i get some redline stuff and put that in there?...

it's a **** off to have it grind like that, it's not too too bad but i think it's getting worse day-by-day....

CHECK OIL LEVEL! And if oil level checks out to be find, you can drain it and run some redline in there, although thats just a delay the dieing syncro from failing completely.

Start double clutching and rev matching. You're gonna sound like a ricer out there but at least you're not screwing up your transmission.....well....too much anyway. Rev matching takes some getting used to

yeah i've been double-clutching lately, but i hate the fact that the synchro is dieing on a tranny that doesent even have 45,000km's on it.... let alone not even 50,000km's on the whole car!...

why would it only start happening after i got the clutch installed though....

Maybe some oil came out through the rear seal when they droped the tranny, and if yuor running low on oil, that will damage your syncros quickly.

ok guys, i just took my car around the block, it shifts perfectly when upshifting from 2nd too 3rd, even racing.... but downshifting into 3rd it's a bitch, anything over 2500rpm and it will grind, whats going on!...

it doesent sound like the synchro would be the problem....

I don't know if this is always true, but i found that cheap gear oil aren't as good as stock. Of course unless your old gear oil is really old. I had really good luck with redline or Royal Purple stuff.

if the synchro's are infact bad, how much would a tranny rebuild cost?...

it only does it downshifting into 3rd guys, anything over 2500rpm grinds, anything under gives me nothing, i need somewhat more of an answer before tommorow when i call them and see when i can get it in....

errr have you checked your oil level yet?

low oil will cause a slightly bad synchro to act worse. it'll also wear all your bearings and ****.

a tranny rebuild is a couple hundred. cheaper if you do the drop/install yourself.

drain and refill your tranny fluid with OEM, redline, or synchromesh, etc. pick one and go with it. if it still grinds, then you should start looking at a rebuild.

try the simple fixes first...

Shifting from 2nd to 3rd doesn't require the syncro to match speeds that are that far apart. When you go from 2nd to 3rd, the engine RPMs are already falling, not speeding up like when you downshift. You know how when you downshift, the RPMs go up? Well so do the RPMs in the tranny, and the syncro is what makes the gear speed up and engage smoothly. With out the syncro, you get that grinding noise because the teeth of the gear are trying to engage at different speeds. Double clutching will help as someone mentioned before. When you let the clutch out in nuetral and rev the gas, both shafts in the tranny (input and countershaft) and all the gears (the gears all spin all the time, but in nuetral, none of them are connected to the output shaft) speed up to the same speed as the engine. The idea is to rev everything to the speed that you would be at when you downshift into 3rd. So if you are at 5000 RPMs in 4th and you down shift into 3rd and would be at 2900 RPMs, you need to double clutch, rev to somewhere around 2900 then downshift. To get a visual of how it all works, go to www.howstuffworks.com and search for transmissions.

Oh, my 3rd gear syncro grinds too, so you aren't the only one.

lol.

well i don't have a FC.

but on my 240sx the 'fill' hole is on the side of the tranny. you pop out the bolt and stick your finger in and feel around for the fluid level. the fluid level *should* be right below the hole. obviously this should be done while the car hasn't been driven. that ish gets hot.

when's the last time you changed the fluid?

i think you should just drain it all and refill with new fluid. easy job.

unbolt the fill plug. then unbolt the drain plug and let all the fluid out. put the drain plug back in. get a funnel, a chair, and a small plastic tube. put one end of the tube in the tranny fill hole. put the other end on the funnel. hold the funnel and stand on the chair. pour tranny fluid into the funnel. when fluid starts pouring out of the fill hole, you're done. bolt it back up and take it for drive.

its ghetto, but its free. i think someone on rx7club did the same job with a super soaker instead.

drop your tranny in your garage and drive it over (preferably in another car) to your local mom and pop transmission shop.

i think i was quoted for $350 before. that was some shop out in NJ.
