Tranny Burning Up?????

I think my tranny may be burning up. I only half like half power to the wheels acceleration is terrible. There is this loud *** high pitched whinning sound. Also my shifter gets pretty hot. Does anyone have a clue what this is about. There is also a blow off type sound almost like a turbo would be. I just rebuilt this engine has about 7k on the motor runs starts and idles great 86/na. I will try to post vid later but for now wondering if we can solve this way.

Thanks

Check your fluid level! It almost sounds like it's dry! How long has this been going on? Since the rebuild or shortly thereafter?

The shifter area getting hot is pretty normal, mine gets really warm when I sit in traffic, I think its just heat off the exhaust rising. Any noises are cause for concern. Check the fluid level in the transmission and differential immediately.

My shifter, for example, will get warm, but never uncomfortable to use. I figured by the way you described it that it's almost too hot to touch. I suppose this should be quantified better.

cat is clogged.

the transmission usually won't affect power until it explodes, then it's general loss is 100%.

plugged up cat heats up everything from the transmission forward.

Car is manual, the sound started today. When I shift gears there is a short air blow off coming from somewhere ive never heard before maybe a bad 5th 6th port actuator?. I lose 10 to 15 miles on a long graded hill down shift don't help either. I attached a wav file listen to it the begining is the best part gets kinda drowned out by wind after that.

Its been about a year and a half since I rebuilt it Also my shifter is not so hot I can touch it, the metal portion just feels a little warmer to the touch than usual.

I figured out the problem. My pulsation damper has a tiny screw on it. Well it was completly loose allowing fuel do leak down between the LIMand into my forward actuator sleeve causing it to completly stop working. I had to take the LIM off and clean up the area and tighten the screw down on the pulsation dampner. Now I have most of my power back but still a little bit of slag. That nasty noise is a leak between the exhaust manifold and precat connection. I am guessing I am getting some power loss there?. Also does anyone know how tight that pulsation dampner screw is supposed to be? Cuz when I took the yellow cap off the end the screw was just laying inside of it. I'm guessing it's supposed to be screwed down tight.

I got the car running and checked it for vibration and it seems to work just fine. I think it just vibrated loose over time. From what I have read the PD can go bad and cause an engine fire. Mine stopped leaking thought once I tighted the screw back down funny.

Replace or remove the pulsation damper completely. The symptom yours has can and has caused engine fires for many people.

Be forewarned, I didn't buy my banjo bolt from summit racing, I think I got mine from the transmission shop I was working at, so I can't say with 100% certainty that this is the right one. However, I saved this part number in my records because I researched this same thing a few years back this was a result of that research.

EDIT: DON'T DRIVE THE CAR UNTIL YOU'VE REPLACED THE PULSATION DAMPER. coxxoc was not exaggerating.

Unbelievably slim chance on that. Banjo bolts aren't that common, and it's metric. I'd recommend calling local machine shops, machine supply shops, and transmission building shops. I won't say to not try parts stores, but the banjo bolts they'll have are probably too small (brake line stuff).

Oh and if possible I'd recommend getting one that's steel instead of aluminum. It'd suck to get one then snap it off in your fuel rail.

12mm x 1.25, I'm not exactly sure how long/short it needs to be.

I just found that same thread on the PD lol. It also provided a link to the Banjo Bolt on summitracing
Was the same link you posted earlier but I had to research and be sure it was the right size. Since you said you were unsure.
Thanks Speed for all the help!
