NY Top speed on s5?

Well Im just curious to know how fast these cars would go with headers, a nice stainless steel exhaust system. no emmisions. and no cat. Before anyone tells me to try to find out on my own ill tell you that i have my car in my garage just waiting to get it insured and with plates, and even if i could drive my car Im not risking taking it to high speeds on the road. so yea jus wondering. 1989 gxl 50,000 miles on body, with a rebuilt motor.

Power available is just one factor.

Other factors include aerodynamics (your car has a CD of about 0.31, and CL of about 0.08F/0.14R), weight, environmental conditions, road quality and inclination, suspension, engine rpm, gear ratio and tire size, traction, and tire speed rating.

I would be more concerned about the speed rating of the tires:
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tirete....jsp?techid=35

Also, keep in mind that all speedometers have some type of error which is increased as the tire size differs from the design size. Therefore, your indicated speed is not necessarily your true speed.

Another top speed thread? Really? This is officailly the 2,000,001st thread on this subject. Does anyone search anymore? I didn't even read all the posts, but I'm guessing some young kid just got an NA FC and is anxious to tell all his friends how fast his "new sports car" can go.

NA RX-7's are not fast. A modern Toyota Camry will go faster. Driving as fast as your car can go on public roads is retarded anyways. Every time someone starts another thread like this, I just know some idiot somewhere will get in their car tonight and drive it recklessly. This thread fails miserably. Hopefully Aaron will be along to close this soon.

that better be on a TII
A N/a S5 has a little bit more of top speed then a S4.
In my S4 GXL I got to 128mph and thats it in 4th gear, no more power to go further. A S5 which has about 20 more hp will probably do 135 or around there.

As evil aviator said, be careful of the tire speed also. If you have a H rated tire, I wouldnt suggesting going over 115mph to be on the safe side....though, you shouldnt be going anywhere near that fast unless on a track...

realistically 135ish for an NA S5 stock, 145ish for a turbo S5. But I did hear that every added sticker adds 10hp plus rims and window tint could add even more HP these cars were built with the IMSA GTU in mind. not exactly top speed. handling

... when my s5 was n/a, I've hit 147mph. With my 6 port turbo, I hit 160mph+ (After that I couldn't tell speedo only goes to 160mph)

Why are you curious about the top speed? I doubt you'll be doing that on the streets, but make sure your tires are good and are rated for the speed.

I dont plan on it at all. Doing stupid stuff like that would get me killed or ruin my chances of joining NYPD. I drove my car around my area and oh man this baby is loud, I can see myself being pulled over at least once week once i get plates on this car.

No way any mostly stock na, s5 or s4, is hitting much above 130mph, which is what it was claimed to do in S5 GTUs trim (lightest model, with 4.3:1 final drive). Not on level ground, or without a substantial tail wind. The S5 turbo was claimed to do 140 - with quite a bit more torque and hp available to help it eek out that extra 10mph. As Evil Aviator points out, at those speeds, it takes more and more ponies for each extra mph. Those who think their Na car is doing 140+ are almost certainly looking at speedometer error, which on at those speeds, on a 18+ year-old car, can be substantial. Especially if non-stock size tires are used. Even with stock-size tires, there is a few percent variation between full and low-tread depth, and between different makes and models of tires (witness 205/50-15 Kumho 710s that have as wide a tread as most 225 width performance tires) Or as I suggested at the beginning, maybe they're taking advantage of a strong tail-wind or downhill. Official top speed numbers, on the other hand, are the average of 2-way, back-to-back runs on the same stretch of road/track, measured with radar or timing equipment.

So back to the OP's question, assuming his car is in like-new running order, and with modest mods (exhaust), he probably could pull an honest 130-135 - likely a little over 130, less likely all the way to 135. Look at it this way - the S5's extra 17hp and whole 2 lb/ft of peak torque (but more and broader thru the rev band) only netted it a 2mph gain in official claimed top speed. So the 20 or so extra HP you might get with exhaust bolt-on's won't net you much more than that 2mph.

I understand that because of the near perfect weight balance the car is supposed to handle very nice, so compared to what modern car does this car handle like?

my vert did 115 bone stock no issues and about halfway through the tach. friend had a base that was bone stock as well that he was using as a daily and we could cruise 130 in it on road trips, well emissions removed on it but all the same 130 wasnt hard
