I got my old stock gxl to 120 in 4th and 5th just bogged down, not enough HP to pull it. I bet I could hit 135 in my gutted 87 base with header

The stock '86-'88 n/a's were rated from the factory at a top speed of 127 mph. I had mine up to 135 once but it took a while to get there. My friend had his S5 up to 140 before it would go no more.

the car in that picture flipped on one of the high speed runs and was then upside down, spinning, at 200MPH... that'd be a scary ride!

I don't trust my speedometer (or any stock speedo, for that matter) but I've had my car to 6300RPM in 5th gear... what's that work out to?

That wasn't the one, it was the 3rd gen one...

My 91 NA with full exhaust did a close to 140MPH, once and only once...

in an na fc the top speed in 5th gear at 7000 rpms with a 4.1 rear end is 189 mph. Look for a gear speed calculator online. It will tell all.

Not quite. A gear calc will tell you the gear-limited top speed, but won't tell you if you have the power to pull to the top of your gearing. In the case of a stock NA FC, it should be around 130-135. That tall 5th gear is for better mileage, BTW.

how much of a difference will smaller or larger wheels and/or tires affect mph and top speed?

Check it on a tire size calculator. miata.net has one. It might cause the top speed to go up or down with smaller diameter, as it depends on the rpm/hp at the top speed you're trying to achieve.

Don't want to burst some bubbles here, but RX7 speedo's are notoriously inaccurate above 110 MPH usually off bye -5 to -10 MPH. So those who say they hit a 140MPH probably were only doing between 130 to 135 MPH.
