When sport compact car took the PS out of their silvia conversion all they did was unhook the lines and move the wheel from side to side to get out all of the PS fluid. And then cap off the lines. two of my friends have done this and it works great for them. the steering got easier when the fluid was removed.

Looping the lines like that causes the steering to be limited to the rate you can flow fluid through the hose. Keep in mind PS pumps create a pretty decent amount of force. They're even used for powering winches on some trucks.

yeah it does.... the real way to go is to find a manual rack.

You'll leave enough in there to not have problems with lubrication. What you're probably feeling is the higher steering rate of the PS geared rack. Fewer turns to lock but that also means less mechanical advantage at the wheel.

Hmmm the rx7 rack must be different from the p/s racks I've have apart. Usually p/s fluid isn't used to lubricate the rack and pinion gears, just a coating of grease. When on full lock in one direction the gear on the rack shaft actually pokes out one side of the rack housing (the boot covers this though), so it'd be quite hard to seal p/s fluid that's under the pressure of the p/s pump

It doesn't lubricate the gears, but the seals inside the rack will bind if there's nothing there to keep them sliding freely.

Good point, but any residual p/s fluid should be enough to keep the seals wet.

Uh. You took out the power steering, so you now have manual steering. It's going to be hard to turn. What did you expect?

edit:
****, just like dudeman said, it's going to be harder than even my car, since your ratio is shittier than a manual rack.

LOL that's what I'm thinking... of course it's harder to turn. that's the point of power steering.

I think the problem he is experiencing isnt necessarily that its hareder to turn, but its very notchy. From what hes told me, I am going to agre with rudeboy in saying he looped the wrong lines.
