PA Title Help

I recently bought a 86 rx7 1.3 non turbo gxl and I got screwed out of the title cuz the seller cut contact with me after the deal, mainily because he told me it was a running car and i dumped about $700 into it already. Its a long story but I am trying to buy a title close to what my car is so I can change the vins off of my car and make it this one so that way i can legaly drive it and get it registered and insure it. Does anyone have any info on if theres a way around this or maybe have a title for a car thats scrapped ill take a salvage I dont care at this point.

appriciated, Thank you.

Does not compute.

Talk to your DMV, just explain the situation and they'll be able to help you out.

What you're suggesting is difficult and illegal.
The VIN is not only on the plate under the windshield but also stamped into the firewall.

If you have a bill of sale, you should be able to get legal help obtaining the real title.
If not- and why not, fer crissakes?- your best bet would be to buy a roller chassis with title and transfer your parts over to it.

Faking a VIN is a federal offense, not worth the trouble.

Dude, you have the bill of sale, right? Log on to the PA DMV site and and download the paperwork for missing/replacement title.

^^^^This

I bought an RX-7 where the title had been lost years ago, it had gone through several owners since. My visit to the dmv involved me walking in, trying to explain, and them telling me to screw off until I had the title.

I ended up buying vin plates from a wrecked RX-7 and swapping them. Worked fine for the one summer I drove it.

there is a company in AZ I think. you pay them $180 and they send you a title form Arazona in their name, signed over to you. then you take that title to your DVM and switch it over. I do it all the time for motorcycles (which only cost $100). i don't have the number or address now. I'm traveling. Send me a PM so i don't forget, and I will post the info.

This is perfectly legal. It takes a month or two to get the title back because the run every check possible to make sure the car isn't stolen.

Edit: a quick google search found it. http://www.getnewtitle.com/
there are others as well. search for "lost title service"

You can find companies to do this in Arizone, Alabama, and I believe Delaware or some place up north. That being said...lesson learned...never buy a car unless the owner signs a title over to you on the spot.

You do have a bill of sale right?

If not then consider this a hard lesson learned.

This is totally not true. I have sold and bought plenty of cars without a title in hand as they were financed. I just sold my M3 and since I had a loan on that car, the bank held the title. It depends on your state. In PA, the state where I live and where the OP is from, we use electronic titles. A bill of sale and the lost title form is all you need is to fill out the duplicate title form:

http://www.dot4.state.pa.us/pdotform...rms/mv-38o.pdf

It is that simple, I have done it before. Cost $22.50. You say the title was lost or distroyed. You will need a bill of sale to register the car. In some states, maybe the title is/was the all important document. In PA, you can have one for $22.50.

We aren't talking about a car that was financed and quite frankly I would consider that your advice is a bit dangerous in that regard unless you are meeting at a bank or attorneys office to conduct a sale of this nature. Why? Because you are asking someone to pay you so you can pay off your loan so there isn't a lien on the car.

Try going to the DMV and getting a title on a car that as a lien against it. Isn't going to happen.

Can you go to the DMV and claim a lost title with a car that as no lien against it? Yep...but it is a little more risky than you are making it out to be...at least in Florida. Just because you CAN do something does not there are less risky ways of accomplishing that task.

My 2cents. Don't buy an older car such as an FC or FB if the owner does not have a title in hand if you want to protect yourself and GET A BILL OF SALE!

With any of these companies, and with any state, they will only issue a new title if you are the owner of the vehicle and your name corresponds to the name on the title, and proof thereof. There are abandoned vehicle titles that can be issued, but that takes years.

Can you imagine the results if they issued a title to everyone who just requests one?

As stated, in PA you should have a notorized bill of sale. That is the only legal way to buy or sell a car. If you have a notorized bill of sale, that is all you need. I cannot speak as to how it work in other states, only in PA. The OP is in PA so if he legally bought this car, he will have a notorized bill of sale and he is taken care of.
