Tire Question

Im thinking about getting some Yokohama AVS-ES100's for my stock rims. I was wondering if I should stick with 205/55/16's or if I should go for the 225/55/16's (all 4 corners). My TII is basically stock so traction isn't a HUGE issue, but I was just curious if it would help my handling enough to justify the extra money spent on wider tires (I'm poor as you can probably tell). Also if anyone has suggestions as to better tires for the general amount of money I'll be spending, I'm open to those as well.

personally, i don't like those tires. I have a pair of them, on my tII rims, and i didn't like the way they felt when they were in the front, and i don't like the way they feel now that they're in the rear. i'm running 205/55/16, if you're gonna get these tires, i'd go w/ the 225's.... maybe they work better when they're wider...? but you wouldn't want 225/55/16's b/c that'd be give u a taller profile than the stock size. you'd want a 225/50/16, i think it is... I'd suggest the tires i've got rite now, the falken azenis sports (they're badass tires) but i noticed you're in portland, and i don't think the azenis sports are the best tire for wet conditions...

No, a 225/50-16 is the same exact height (4.4 inch sidewall- 24.9 inch diameter) as a 205/55-16.

You just gain a little in tread width.

So you guys would recommend taking 225's over the 205's regardless of which tire I go for then?

Not all 225/50/16's will fit up front. It might rub against the strut on the inside.

YOKOS!!

I have set of those exact tires in 215/60/15 on my 90 gtu with a 60-1 turbo. They hook up awesome! On my first run at the track with the 60-1@10psi i went 13.0 @108 with a 2.1 60'. They do awesome in the rain too, i wouldnt worry too much about performance in the snow. I think you could probably lift the car 5 inches and put 35 inch mud tires and the car would still not do well in the snow, but as far as dry traction, im in love!

I have those too and I really like them. What do you dislike about the feel and what do you like better?

If you look at the comparison tests on www.tirerack.com, the performance is excellent for the price but the kicker is that the treadwear rating is 280.

i dislike the fact that the sidewalls are a bit soft, and they don't hold very well while cornering hard... when i put them in front, i got understeer... now i have them in the rear, and sometimes i get oversteer...

Really? I thought the sidewalls were pretty stiff. (granted I have 45 profile) What tires do you prefer?

falken azenis sports.... the ones i have are 205/55/16's... maybe it gets better w/ smaller profile tires... but if you compare them to the azenis sports in the same size, WOW what a difference.

and they're not too expensive either, which makes them really attractive tires, assuming you're running in mostly dry conditions.

I dont really daily drive my car because I have an AE86 too. With that said, I dont drive it when its raining either. The car is mostly going to be used for auto-x, touge, and occasionally a drag or two. So given those circumstances, should I go with the Azenis Sports in 205 or the AVS in 225 or 205? The prices of the 3 are very close.
