Tire Pressures
Tire Pressures
What tire pressures do you use for your FC?
for what it's worth, I'm running 215/45r17 and 235/45r17. that probably doesn't matter, though.
Oh, and I prefer gripping the road; not drifting.

werd, i run 32 psi up front and 31 in the rear. having a lower tire pressure in the rear will give you a little more traction in the rear. so i would recommend the psi's i'm running. but also, it's all preference, if you feel comfortable running a higher pressure, then adjust it to your driving style. you also have to take your suspension mods into consideration. but again, try different pressures until you find one that works good for you with your own driving style.
Well if you're looking for the maximum amount of grip then you need to break out the chalk, rub it on your tread, drive as hard as you can, if you're rubbing chalk off the sidewall you need to increase your pressure. If you're not taking chalk off the entirety of the tread you need to lower the pressure a little.

This may qualify as a stupid question, but is there any special kind of chalk I should use?
Oh, and by the way, thank you to everyone who has responded.
I just got a new wheel and tire setup, and thanks to everyone's input, you've confirmed what I believed before- I was running too high a pressure.
I was running about 38 in the front, and 43 in the rear. When driving with those pressures, I noticed a "waggle" to the tail end every time I took a corner. I lowered my pressures to 35 and 37, with much better results. However, I think I'll drop to 32 all around, and see how it feels. Then, I'll experiment with Monkay's chalk trick.

I run 32 all around on 215/45/17's.

I run about 37. Most of my driving is casual so I just do it for the gas mileage (every bit helps). I think my door sticker recommends 32psi. That's off the top of my head though...

my tires can handle up to 51
I inflated them without having a pressure gauge handy; I only knew they were low. Never intended to take them up past 40, but the inflator worked a LOT faster than I would've guessed.

Rims: 16" x 8"
Tires: Yokohama ES-100 225-45-R16
During autocross events: Front=29 psi, Rear=27 psi. I've been using the chalk method. I use a few psi more when its really dry out though. Most autocross events have been wet/moist enough to justify the lower tire psi. Otherwise, I use about 32psi for daily driving.

Just because you put more air doesnt mean youll get better gas milage or performance. After ~32psi all your doing is making the contact patch bow outwards. Just cause the tire says max 44psi (mine is 44 max) doesnt mean you should go to 40. 32 psi or within 2psi is pretty much recommended for best gas milage and tire life by all tire manufacturers. Anything over 35psi is just uncalled for...
Of course unless your running the tires for auto-x or drag only, then you can play with your pressures. but more than likely if your not making huge power or have a really modified auto-x car, tire pressure should be just fine at the standard 32psi
