Timing question, won't time??
I had a chance to see " seventhgear's" car last night. It a S4 GXL, I think
He told me the car was rebuilt and had 3000 miles on it and was trying for more power. I checked his timing and it was about and inch away from the Trailing mark.
I advanced the timing all the way and I was still about 1/2" away from the trailing mark. This is very odd, as I had the timing light around the leading plug #1.
His car also would not respond to idle adjustments. The Rich/lean screw was stripped out and just kept turning, and the air mixture was not doing anything.
What could we do to be able to time this car?
Pull the CAS and see if its alined correctly?
We also need to unwrap the oil lines from the oil meter rod.
I hope Jack doesn't have a problem with me asking these questions for him.
Sorry Jack!

You'll need to re-stab the crank angle sensor. Also, you can only set the timing with the engine at or near 750 RPM - if it's idling high, you'll never get the timing set right.

I know, I really don't need a timing light, as I have been timing these cars for years and know exactly where it should be in relation to the slide on the CAS.
I do have to pull the CAS and see if its off.
Thanks

You claim to be experienced in this sort of thing, yet your post looks like you "eyeballed" the leading timing mark on the pulley?  Doesn't the pulley already have a mark for leading?

On the variable resistor(richleanscrew), just disconnect the plug to it and see what happens. I *think* the ECU will default to some preset value. Even better take it out of the car and ohm it out thru its full range, if its got a full range anymore. Its slightly possible that even thought the screw travels 360 on your car, when it shouldn't, that the wiper just falls off the pot at a certain point and comes back on the pot when you rotate the screw enough. You should be able to get one from the wreck yard for a couple of bucks.
Just one more thing about the odd idle. You have three vac hose on the front of the dynamic chamber. One above the other. Make sure the very bottom one goes to a metal pipe that is located a few inches below it and makes its way to the drivers side of the engine(from now on refered as the left side). Only one of those three is pulling a vacuum from the dynamic chamber and thats the bottom one. If the bottom two are crossed you will get a odd, rough idle. Probably not your problem, but what if?
