Question Timing Question

This may be a silly question, But I have never seen it asked, So I guess I will stick my head out.

When check my timing (with a timing light ) I pin lines up with the scratch (somebody just scratched the lines, there is no paint demarking the timing positions, just scratches) My question is that which way is which way do you turn the Crank Angle Sensor? I don't plan on doign this, I would just like to understand how it works.

IIRC, turning the CAS fwd (clockwise) makes the pulley timing mark turn clockwise (as viewed from the front of the engine), and vice-versa...Maybe somebody else can chime in & tell us if that advances, or retards the timing, cause I dunno that one...

If I had to make an educated guess, I'd say it retards it (using the scenario above)...

I don't about the CAS but I would say you should re-check your timming once you have painted new makes in the divits where they originally resided. I don't see how "scratches" can be reliable, and my timming pulley has lots of "scratches", non of which were purposely made, but all looked like some sort of timming markes. If you rotate the engine clockwise, the first "U" shaped divit is the yellow mark. The second one is red.

I figured out during my rebuild that the original timing mark colors were still there, they were just "grimed over"...I (think) I was saying turning the CAS clockwise (viewed from the top) will retard the timing, but I'm not gonna bet my paycheck on that...Gotta 50/50 shot, anyway

I did this 3 hours ago, turn the CAS towards the front of the car(Clockwise) will RETARD the timing, turning it towards the firewall(Counter-Clockwise) will ADVANCE the timing.
