timing advanced=no flame?

Hey guys help me understand this. If I have a straight pipe in place of the cats, I should be able to spit flames at high RPM shifts..or so it seems from what I read on here. But my car just backfires a bunch and no fire...could this be because the ignition timing is advanced a few degrees? Seems to me advancing the timing would burn more of the fuel and send less out the *** end, thus no fire. Or could it be because I still have the stock cat-back? (N1 is on order) Or do you think I'm just not running rich enough. I can keep the stock exhaust manifold right...I didn't think i would need a header too. By the way, how do you make it burn more rich? larger pump and injectors or is there a cheaper easier way? I'm out.

The stock mufflers are killing the flames. I just bought the whole flame spitting shebang:RB header, RB presilencer, and single N1 catback. Now that will definatly shoot some hella flames! In short, get a new catback, that should do the trick.

right the N1 is in shipment as we speak. But even with the stock manifold and advanced timing I should still be breathin fire you think?

i agree with rico...usually depends on the pipe and muffler design. once you throw the N1 on you'll definately be seeing flames.

on my T2 i have dp, mp, no cats, and a small catback...no flames...no high rpm pops...

on my n/a i only have high flow cat and turbo back N1...i get a HUGE POP when shifting above 6K...and would be dumping flames out the back if i didn't have the cat

No. Cats and mufflers kill flames. The cheap way to do it is cat replacement pipe and a N1 catback, or other random 4" muffler!

but my real question is the timing....does advanced ignition timing reduce or eliminate flames?

Technically reduce, but not at extremes.
An overly retarded ignition fires the spark plugs later, and therefore in extreme situations it fires the intake and fuel charge as it's exiting out the exhaust!&nbsp There's your flames in the exhaust system!

No, or at least I don't think so.

The flames are from the car running very rich in between shifts. Unburned fuel gets tossed into the exhaust, and it burns or detonates there.

The stock mufflers aren't restrictive enough to keep flames in, it's the cats that kill it. If you have a straight through plus the stock mufflers and you hear popping, but no flames that means there isn't enough unburned fuel being thrown out.

If I'm not mistaken the FC has a recirculating BOV. This means that between shifts the BOV sends fresh air back through the intake to help burn off this extra fuel, preventing afterburn. If you replace the BOV with one that'll vent into the atmosphere you'll most certainly shoot flames.

Since the FC runs MAF the ECU thinks that it still has all that air that you're venting into the atmosphere with the aftermarket BOV because it's normally being recirculated back into the intake, after the MAF sensor. So it adds more fuel to keep the car from running lean and detonating.

On a lightly modified car a recirculating BOV is good because it helps to keep the turbo spooled between shifts. With one that ventilates to the atmosphere you may suffer a bit in performance, but you'll get some kick *** flamage and a really cool sound.

I saw a TII on Hwy 80 West Bound between Fairfield and Vallejo spitting flames a couple of weeks ago. He had Dual N1's. [Made me feel good that he was barely walking away from my GXL]

If you don't have cats you get flames. I have stock mufflers and I didn't think I was getting flames. I just got backfires, or so I thought...

I was told that I had fire coming out of the back of my car so I had my kid watch as I went up down a deserted, dark street. Well after a nice loud backfire I look back and see my kid on his knees from laughing so hard. He said I have three foot blue flames coming out both sides.

OK cool, it works!

One note, it takes a little practice to get the really big ones.

damn, i couldnt even shoot flames with straight damn pipes, header and a 2 1/4" pipe, no flames, but thats probably because my timing was WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY too advanced as i found out yesterday lol

I got pacesetter header, no cats, and factory dual muffers, but no flames sux. How loud would it be with single 4" muffler? Cops around here really suck! Then again EVERY teen ghetto wanabe has a "muffler" on there minivan, satern, deawoo, honky(honda), tempo & escort. I live right off US 1 and maybe 9/10 cars have mufflers on them. Maybe 1/50 of them are even sport cars.???
