You advance the timing by turning the CAS clockwise. Youll need to run higher octane gas if you advance your timing more than a few degrees. But it gives you more power, especially in the low end.

I wouldn't advance it much more than 2 degrees.

Ive had mine as high as 10-11 degrees advance on 93 octane. Currently, I run about 7 degrees advance on 89 octane.

either you have big *****, big brains, or a big wallet. I was under exaggerating the safe advancement but I had never heard of 11 degrees. I must try this, how much more power do you think it gave you? Is it worth it? Any pinging at all when you did this?

Any engine can detonate, it is just harder to make an n/a detonate when compared to a tII.

N/a's can detonate just as easily as a TII. The difference is the chamber pressures are much lower, and n/a's dont blow when they detonate.

Looking back, I had VERY minor detonation around the turque peak. I could never hear it, but you could feel a very slight loss in power. Thats the easiest way to tell if you went to far. If your engine seems a little less powerful then before in the midrange, back your timing off a little. But it wont kill the motor. But I didnt realize that when I was running that much timing.

Also, my intake temps were sky high due to where my air filter *was*. This was causing the ECU to back the timing way off. Advancing the timing helped my car A LOT then, but I had to run high octane. Now that I look back, I realize that I wasnt advancing the timing as much as I had thought, because the base maps were retarded from the high intake temps.

I havent tried to run 93 octane with 100 degrees advance since I moved my air filter(which fixed the above problem), but Im safely running about 7 degrees advance on 89 octane. And you can ask Justin(rx7impreza), my car RUNS.

Quick re-cap: advancing the timing in a n/a WILL NOT make you detonate enough to blow a motor. Im sure someone is going to try to prove me wrong, but you cant do it without pulling the CAS, and re-aligning the internals for more advancement of the timing. And I dont know if your car would even run with the timing advanced enough to blow the motor.

There are NO marks on my pulley...is there a way I can still adjust the timing (both the red and yellow marks are gone...many years have past I guess since it's now 16 years old...). ANY help would be more than appreciated!

Mazdaspeed7? Do you run or can you run lean with a S-AFC and still use your 7 degrees advance?

You loosen the nut on the CAS, and then you turnit clockwise to advance the timing.
