If its turbo then your turbo may be dying...

If its not a turbo then your oil control rings are probably going out. Mine does the same thing. As long as you check the oil level regularly you should be fine, but start saving for a rebuild. Also, doing the water trick isn't a bad idea since burning all that oil will cause extra carbon deposits.

A simple test for oil control seals, is to hold it at 4500rpm in nuetral. If it starts smoking heavy then the seals are going.

My 91 NA with 113,000 does this too. The problem is only getting worse. I was told it smaked a little back in March then I started seeing a smoke during High RPM upshifts a few weeks ago and last week at the autocross it was really bad and I could see tons of it in my rearview mirror. I was told I killed every mosquito within 2 miles. I figured I may end up blowing my motor this weekend. I saw that I can get a rebuilt motor for $1,000.

What is it going to cost me to rebuild it myself? I have seen gasket kits for
$120 http://catalog.worldpac.com/zygmunt/...ine+Gasket+Set
to
$900 http://www.atkinsrotary.com/store/cu...cat=611&page=1 .

What is the water trick?

Is the oil control ring the same as the inner and outer oil seals in the Haynes manual?

The $900 kit atkins sells is a whole rebuilt kit and includes apex seals and such where as the other kit does not.
