Unhappy time to fix it or sell it...

My 87 GXL is my baby.. I love this car.. It was the first car I bought on my own and my fiance and I have done all the work ourselves.

I have a few issues that have to be resolved ASAP or I'm going to have to sell him. I can't drive the car as it is at the moment.

Any help you can give so I can fix the car and not sell it would be appreciated.

mods: Cold air intake.. strut tower bar.. exhaust.. nothing that could affect any of my problems.

1) The windshield fogs horribly. At first it was the hose leaking on the firewall.. I was collecting antifreeze on my windshield.. We fixed this. Well, I still have a fogging windshield.. to the point where if i wipe it the fog doesnt come off, infact it can smear to the rest of my windshield if i'm not careful. It seriously took carb cleaner to get it off there last time. I do NOT smell antifreeze.. is it my heater core?

2) My vents seem to be stuck on my dash vents. I cannot change to the floor or the defroster. I can however control my temperature and my fan speed. Thoughts?

3) The car will start, do the 3k start up and then drop to idle.. then die. TPS? I can deal with this.. but still.

4) My car smells like gas.. yeah yeah yeah Pusaltion Dampner.. I know... I never see any gas.. just smell it.

5) Horns dont work.. Hear the relay clicking. But no horn sound.. not from either button.

Honestly this car is my baby.. I need to get it painted.. my clear coat is flakeing and making it look nasty icky. If I can just fix the "permafog" on my windshield I would never have an issue keeping the car.

Thanks
-Kerri

#1 sounds like leaking heater core, but you should be probably be able to smell coolant...

2 you probably need to resolder the heater control box.

3, have you removed the cold idle cam? it should idle at 1500 when cold...

5 since when did we have 2 horn buttons?? might want to try to resolder the cpu. check fuses if you haven't already...

Since 1986, but not after 1988 I believe I think there's a few S4's that have one, but most have two. All S5's have one horn button. That's what I think, I could be wrong.... but I'm positive my 87TII has two and i know it's another of the S4/S5 differences.

Agree with above. Sounds like you need a logicon (heater control box) or you could resolder yours. You can also adjust the cold start thermowax on the TB (this fixed my cold idle problem). If the thermowax is bad, just replace it. As for smelling like gas.....my car used to smell like this. I THINK it was the cleaning of the injectors that made it go away.

1. Agree with the leaking heater core, have one used if you want. 88 SE parts car I have, PM me.

2. Also have a heater control box, also cheap.

3. ??? Haven't dealt with this problem, no advice. Sorry.

4. Get the injectors either rebuilt (www.injector.com) or else run some premium with some FI cleaner through them and run the engine up in rpms. Also, check that the lines running to the charcoal canister aren't leaking. A friend's FC was reaking of gas bad and part of the problem was a disconnected vacuum line running to the charcoal canister. The rest involved intake leaks.

5. Have (2) 88 SE cars. My daily driver and my parts car. Both have 1 button horns. If horn button is bad, switch steering wheels with my parts car's steering wheel too.

Good luck.

on your horns, if you hear the relay clicking the circuit is working properly. Go to the horns themselves and check for power and ground when buttons are pushed. Sounds like your horns are dead

86-87 use the two spoke wheel with two buttons.
