TII ppl: what muffler to use as presilencer?

Currently, I'm running:

3" dp -> gutted 3" cat -> dual 3" magnaflow mufflers(6"round, 14" body/chamber)

It's waaaay too loud to have this setup and be living in SoCal. Before I gutted the cat, it was still pretty damn loud too.

I was wondering what mufflers you guys use as presilencers that will be able to quiet it down to acceptable levels. I was thinking of gettin the 5x8" oval Magnaflows with 18" body/chamber in place of the gutted cat. Would this make it almost as quiet as the RB turbo-back?

I really don't have the cash to go with the RB presilencer... The Magnaflow is about $75 as compared to the RB one at ~$225

get a hi flow cat

use glass packs after the y pipe (the greddy system uses them)

then it should be pretty quite.

i have 3 inch DP/hi flow/greddy PE cat back

it's very quite. Mustangs and other trucks stock are louder than my car.

My friend's old NA use to have a RB headers, a straight pipe, to Thrust cat back. And it was pretty quiet for a straight exaust.

The cat I gutted WAS a high flow cat, but it still wasn't much quieter... With my car just idling in an open lot next to a busy freeway, I can hear it from about 50yards away. Now with the cat gutted, I swear I can hear my car idling over the noise of the freeway from about 100yards.

Our engines are too hot for glass packs...They won't last hours...

Sounds like your mufflers are the problem...

I never thought my T2's were too loud and I had DP's with no cats back to free flowing Chrome mufflers...
It wasn't bad at all at idle...

Now WOT...They she would sing!

Yea... I should've gotten longer mufflers.

I'm hoping a longer presilencer will help out a little bit though...

if you put the packs up front they are too hot for them.

but right before the muffler after the y pipe it is not that hot.

greddy has it this way. They are holding up fine.

Not all "glasspacks" are low temp fiberglass fibers either.

Some use ceramic fibers (I believe Greddy advertises this) and others use "rock wool" or "slag wool".

Magnaflow "race series" stainless mufflers use all stainless case core and mesh and then "rock wool" behind the ss mesh. Companies list their rock wool as good to 1,200 deg F.- not sure of the other fibers.

I am planning to use a Borla Sportsman XR-1 3 1/2" in/out 15" long case as a presilencer as they are all stainless w/ stainless wool.

I would use a RB presilencer if I had a 3" exhaust since they are SO quiet.

Then I will use some of the Magnaflow "race series" as premufflers since they are also available in 3 1/2" in/out and shorty 6" case lengths that can fit is those tight areas needed on a 3 1/2" exhaust car that is lowered to the limit of streetability.

Then Borla XR-1 as a main silencer.

I think I will try a "silencer cone" and turndown at the tip.

Ohk, I replaced the gutted cat with the 5x8" Oval 18" long Magnaflow muffler... Holy ****!

It did wonders... my car is sooo quiet! Under boost, it's probably more quiet than the RB turbo-back for FC's but idle and cruising is still a little louder and a little more droney.
