TII Ignition / Low Boost - More Info.

Guys,

For those of you that have been following this, here are some new observations:
1.) The timing light will light up for a second or two on L2 while the engine is accelerating but flashes intermittently at constant speeds or idle.
2.) According to other posts both L1 and L2 are supposed to fire at the same time but I can't see the timing marks when using L2, I only see the lines on L1.
3.) When the car is making good boost you can hear the turbo spool up at low revs (2400 RPM or so), when it's not making good boost you don't hear it at all.
4.) The good boost mode is accompanied by a rock steady idle, the low boost mode still idles good but it's about 100 - 200 RPM slower and there is an itermittent miss.

Any ideas???????

That's exactly the same as I'm seeing. How many miles on your car? I borrowed a scope (digital storage - nice!) from work and I hope to poke around under the hood on the weekend. Will post results when I have them.

My car has 226 K miles. The previous owner says he had a Mazda dealer install a NEW engine in it about 70K miles ago. So.....i'm not really sure how many miles are on which components. I'm not even sure that the low boost condition is related to the ignition (so many people have said there is nothing wrong with the ignition). I've checked the TID, new vac. lines, new gaskets, etc....

Henrik,

While attempting to diagnose the sprark plug wires I pulled one of the leading wires off for a few seconds (no change in the idle). Then I swapped the wire that I had on L1 with the one I had on L2....just to see if the intermittent firing would follow the wire (note...I swapped the other end of the wire on the plugs also so I didn't change which coil went to which plug...only the wire). Now I get an ALMOST steady firing on both wires with the timing light (although still not as steady as on the trailings). Took the car for a drive and it boosted all the way to the + sign on the factory gauge...it's never been that high in the two years i've owned it! So....i'm still at a loss to explain what's going on but it's working right now. I'll let you know what happens tomorrow.

Well.....this makes no sense. I got back from an extended test drive...all the while making great boost....checked the spark with the timing light and it still does not flash on T2....I found that by moving about mid way between the coil and the spark plug you can get nice regular flashes and can see the timing marks on T1 and T2. Anyway.....why is my car making more boost than it ever has????? The ONLY thing I can figure...and this does NOT make sense is that when I was fooling around with the coil I pulled off the T2 wire with the engine running and then noticed that it was arcing to the initial set connector....how the hell this could have done anything I don't know but the car is making more boost (according to the factory gauge than it ever has). It is boosting to the middle of the + sign now. I guess i'll just wait and see if it stays fixed.
