Is anyone serious about getting a carbon fiber hood. Not a cheap *** rice burner imitation. The real thing. I've wanted one for my car for a while and no one is that serious about it. I've contacted a company and they do have the means of making it. I would have to have a mold made and they would make me however many I want. 1-100. Just want a little feedback too see how much interest there is. Choose betweeen the N/A or T2.

Let's go with the standard NA hood with inverse hood scoops (air goes out) for now as making the TII carbon hood is going to take some series work. You'll have to live with hoodpins unless you go with the normal FC underhood frame.

yeah, lets go ahead and find out the pricing info on this... im selling my '86 fc to my sister pretty soon and am already in the works of getting another FC, this time with a stick(couldnt take this auto b/s no more... it does nothing for me) Good thing about that is, there will be 2 rx-7s in my family, though i know some of you may have more. oh yeah, N/A hood for me

Will it be rigid enough to use stock mounting/latching positions?

It's exactly this type of b.s. that caused the last buys to fall through. You say <whiney voice on> "I want a reverse hood scoop!" and someone else says "but I want a naca duct above the airbox area" and another person says "no, I want one like the Mazdaspeed hood!"

NO! Eric, go with the N/A hood. It's the most simple, and therefore will be cheapest. It's also the most widely applicable. You want a reverse hood scoop, vaughnc? Pay someone else to do the custom work - don't keep everyone from getting one by turning this into an "I wanna" thread.

I think people need to stop with all the "I want" stuff even though the reverse scoop sounds nice. Well I do think we should prolly go with the NA hood for price. There would b no custom work to add the scoop and should be cheaper. Did they give a ballpark price? Because when you $700-800 some of these people are going to be out, me included prolly.

 

if the price is right im in. the 20b would like a t2 style hood, but i can get a scoop later.

If you want a NA hood, why don't you just get an aluminum one?

I'm going to have the n/a one made because I have an extra n/a hood behind my house. Plus it's easier on them so it will be better work.
It's not a bolt on application. You will need hoodpins because this thing will be thin. Very tough material though.
Cost for mold is approximately $500.
Cost for hood is approximately $500.

I am not going to be making any money on these. As a matter of fact, the more people that throw down, it helps to lower the cost. I've searched for over a year and a half for one of these bitches with no luck. Here's our chance to be one of the few lucky RX's with CF hoods.
What do you say?

 

I will divide the cost of the mold by how many people actually want the hood. We might even get lucky and keep the entire cost below $500 each.

how many layers of CF? what grade of Cf is it? Don't the decent ones cost around $400? Anyways, I'll be down to get a N/A style one. But also think that we could probably find a different company that'll do it for cheaper. Why not ask Mazspeed7 to make one for us?

Call me a pecimist but, iiiits kinda tiring talking about prts that will seemingly never be. If anyone REALLY wants a CF hood they could just contract someone to make one. It may cost a few bucks or a grand! But certainly can be done. I do novice work with CF but making a hood wouldnt be THAT hard and its only about 100$ or less in materials. Dont get me wrong, I would but one if it was infront of me but I dont put much stock in this kinda crap anymore. Giid luck anyway

Where do you get your materials from?!?! There is no way you could make a hood for $100 in materials. $400 in materials is much closer to actual cost, and thats at the $25 a square yard I pay for cf cloth.

 

Im all for a CF hood but having the rear hinges would be nice, if its too thin it will flex too much which could be bad. also what size CF 12W, 6W, what?? This should be a vote on what kind, a NA would be nice but plain and kinda un attractive, i can get a AL N/A hood whick won't weigh too much more. and $500 for a N/A CF hood is kinda steap w/o hinges, thats what a Crx SiR CF hood w/ the hump for the DOHC motor costs, and it has that stupid little hump!!! a reverse scoop would 0wn everything. as for the rice burner fake ones, i have yet to see a fake CF hood on a "rice burner".... wait a min. our cars are from Japan too.... lol. just make sure it fits right and is made right and ill buy any kind N/A or not.

 

Kim307 I don't know how many layers or what grade. I'll be sure to ask that same question myself. As for mazdaspeed7, he's got alot going on with his own things. The COMPANY does just carbon fiber fabrication. If you find any company willing to do it cheaper, by all means put in on this thread.
Boost I was planning to get one for myself. Yes the cost came up to a grand. I'm only offering this to everyone else because I'm tired of BSers and some people actually want one.
Acme I also want the rear hinges, but if they can't be done what can you do. This isn't a choice as to what kind people want. I only have a n/a to offer as a mold so that solves that problem. As for the CRX one for $400, those are mass produced for the millions of people with hondas. We have to have this custom made so that's where the expense is.

 

well I just heard from one of my friends that Fiber Images do custom work, but they need a hood to make a mold from and then need at least 10 orders. but looking how much they usually cost, i think it'll be around $400 or so. i'm gonna send them an email and see what's up.

Mazdaspeed, I too pay around 25$ a yard from US Composites. As I said I am a novice with CF but how many square yards would the stock hood be? Maybe 3? With aluminum supports, and 2 extra layers of resin, and maybe a layer of fiberglass mat that would be around 100-150$ Though I guess the "right" way would use all and only CF. The way I mentioned would still be very light and look the part. Correct me if I am wrong please

I run a sppedshop, and CF hoods for Hondas are around 300$ my cost. How could they be 400$ in materials at that price? What would make a rex hood cost so much more?
