To those with FMICs

what kinda oil temps do you see? both highway and city.

I mounted my starion IC in the front with no piping just to watch. and today I hit 210F which is like the oh crap max limit. hmm.... and that is while moving. not much stoping where I live

water peaking at 200F but it was hitting 197 before so not much diff (I think my gauge might be off a bit... never goes below 187)

I think I'm on to plan B mounting.

Ah, now I understand. You still had the TMIC in, and you were checking the effectiveness of the radiator and oil cooler?

I thought you meant you were testing stuff on the Turbo.

I normally run around 189-200 water temps and 195-210 oil temps on the highway at around 80 mph with ambient temps of around 90-100 degrees. Around town with same ambient temps car runs much cooler. Water temps stay at 189-193 and oil temps never exceed maybe 175-180 if that. I took the car out tonight in 70 degree weather and on the highway the water temps stayed at 189-190 and oil temps never exceeded 180. The stock mazda thermostat I have never seems to allow a coolant temp lower than 188. These temps are read off of the Haltech data screen and an autometer oil temp gauge.

wow those oil temps seem kinda hot... I see 150-160F on the highway at night time. and like 170-180 when it's hoter or off highway.

you need to make sure that the fmic doesn't block the oil cooler. i talked to paul at k2rd about that, and he had the same problem, high oil temps with the front mount.

Normally, on average temperature days, my water temp goes a bit over 180 both HW and CTY.

But, sometimes when its really hot and humid (35-38 C) I've seen the temps get close to 210 F in stop and go traffic.

I'm wondering whether I might need a new oil cooler...???

ya the water temps went up about 1 degree with the FMIC in place but the oil went up 10 on the highway, and 20 or so higher in city...

I'm gona stack my IC ontop of my oil cooler now. much shorter and less bends on the IC piping. full air flow to the oil cooler, but less to the IC.

first how do ya'll know exactly what temps your engines running, I guess ya'll have after market temp gauges. Scott why not just spend 300 bux on an aquamist kit, water injection has the same if not more performance added as a FMIC does, plus if your running 10+ boost you won't have to worry about detenation. Yah, you must have it tuned properly for it to work at optimum levels and you prolly should check to see if there is water in the aquamist injection system, if thiere isn't, I'm sure you know but its bad news.

Just a thought, that way you could just keep the stock mount IC

Are you ducting the airflow to go through the oil cooler?&nbsp Usually, the plastic engine undertray is removed due to obstruction from the FMIC.&nbsp Reducting the the air usually drops the temps pretty quickly...

nope the plastic is there. the IC is sitting on it. and I made a little alum "hat" thing on top of the oil cooler too, attahced to that metal rod that runs across infront of it. so air can't go over the cooler that goes under the rod.

edit. you can kinda see the "hat" here

Hey Scott,

Can you put the oil cooler in front of the FMIC? Obviously there will have to be custom brackets made fot the oil cooler, but could that be an option?

that why you buy a water injection kit, which will lower intake temps and prevents detenation

FMIC=money pit

I have calculated some costs and it is much cheaper if you go with the aquamist kit.
