thinking of purchasing an 2nd gen Rx7

I have recently been looking at purchasing a 2nd gen rx7. I am in highschool which means i dont have much cash. I am looking for a car in the $2,000 to $3,000 range. I first looked at a 86 gxl but when inspected by a mechanic the motor was completly gone, it needed new seals belts hoses everything. even the transmission was about to fail. Is it going to be possible to find a decently reliable rx7 in that price range?

thanks

make sure your mechanic knows what the hell he is talking about first. 99.9 % of mechanics couldnt find an apex seal if you stuck it up their ***

Don't spend all your money on the car.. an older used car is inevitably going to need at least a few repairs.

I paid $2400 for a 1990 GXL a year ago. I have since spent close to $1000 on repairs/maintenace.

Also, when buying any used vehicle have it throughly insepected by a mechanic. When buying a used RX-7, make sure you have a compression test done.

nebie read-up section?

I was looking into buying a 2G RX7 myself, and am currently looking for a "What to look out for" forum. Is there one here or is it just wishful thinking? Any help/PM's/suggestions would be more than welcome. thanks!

its a GTU? --- haven't test driven it yet but would like to get started as soon as possible.

I take it an 89 GTU is not a turbo edition? He claims it has a high idle (which seems to be common) and the automatic transmission takes about 4 seconds to engage into gear from park. Anyone any ideas? Oh yeah, $1000 bucks.
