Thinking about a quick disconnect for the wiring harnesses

I have searched and found a little information on the project of putting two quick disconnects at both wiring harness points of the firewall. I am looking for anyone that has done this. I am not sure where to start in looking for the parts. I am wanting to use some military spec connects. Any info would be appreciated.

Mil-Spec connectors are good, but pricey

You need to be careful which mil-spec connector you use becuase some of them are very limited in the gauge size wire they can accept. Example - here we see a 65 pin connector and all 65 wires bundled together are less than 1/2" in diameter. Most of them are 18-22 ga. where as the factory harness is much thicker.

Can I ask why you would want to do this to the chassis harness?? That seems like all you are doing is tripling the chance of failure.

I went looking for a pic I had for ya but I couldn't find it. At the DGRR in 2005 there was a 3rd gen where the owner had made a quick disconnect for his engine. One huge military type looking connection for everything on the passenger side firewall. Was clean and nice but I imagine it was a PITA to do.

No clear enough reason has come to me yet to proceed with it. The, "I think it's cool" reason isn't enough. I am just gathering info.

I think the main reason would be if you wanted or needed to pull the engine out quickly. Other than that like you said the "cool" feature is... debatable. It did make for a nice clean engine bay though.

I had it done to make the engine easier to work on. Undo one connector and zing - haul the motor. No more screwing around with UIM and all that other crap. Two oil lines, two fuel lines, 5 coolant lines, one throttle cable, one alt cable and a few vac lines and out the entire assembled motor comes. For the engine I think it's worth it IFF you are doing a full harness. The chassis harness is a waste.

Yea, I will do the engine harness. I have my engine out and am having the engine bay painted so I am looking at different things to do. I am just going to clean and re wrap my chassis harness and call it good.

Eggie turned me on to this thread https://www.rx7club.com/forum/showthread.php?t=336924

Lot of good information in there if someone is interested in this project.

the less you have to hack up your engine harness, the better IMO.
