Angry Think I'm getting fleeced

GRRRRRR! I'd really love to nuke the local Mazda dealership from orbit. Wife had been complaining of a loud noise from under the hood. Take it to the dealership and they said it was an oil issue. "Bugger that!" I said. So I did some exploring, and lo and behold... found the cause of said noise. The auxilliary cooling fan.. the one in FRONT of the radiator, had broken two blades. So... we take it to dealership ( I know, I know... from now on we go the Mom-n-Pop RX7 specialists we've since found) to get said fan replaced. Got the estimate today. Two hours labour I can understand. What I CAN'T fathom is the $300+ price of the damn fan! How much is one of these little bastards? All the local parts places said they couldn't get it, which left the fershlugginer dealer! I feel like I'm getting jerked around royally, and so does the wife. Who can name a reputable parts broker for '91 Dash7's?

A very hacked off N1396L.

most parts from a dealer are outrageously priced. Especially the ones that you can't get from a local autoparts store. I like to do my own work because I'm a mechanic, but it also saves me from the price gouging racketeering that the dealers do. Local parts stores and junk yards are good for parts, though some parts are better off new.

2 hours labour? I removed mine in about 10 mins. 5 mins if you don't have the stock plastic infront of the rad.

and did you have the A/C on while it was making the noise?

that fan only runs if the A/C is on. of it temps go over 207F or so. as a back up. if the fan is comming on with the A/C off. might be time to look over the cooling system. drain/ flush / fill and a new mazda thermostat.

OEM parts from the dealer are quite expensive, and the labour on our cars isnt always so reliable. Do a search of dealership stories on here and you'll find out what im talking about lol

If you want Mazda parts, http://www.mazdaformance.com (one of the Forum's sponsors) isn't the best place, it's the ONLY place. Call and ask to speak to Brian in parts. The prices are regularly lower than anywhere else (except Mazdacomp, of course), and the service is top-m'fuggin-notch. I love those guys.

Some parts are quite reasonably priced from a dealer. Just about anything you might buy from Mazdatrix can be had from the dealer for a little more, but there is no shipping costs.

True. My dealer even gives me 10% off retail price because he sells so few Rx-7 parts. I have to order & wait 3-5 days, but comes out cheaper than mazdatrix when you factor shipping.

Join Mazdacomp. You only have to autocross your car twice a year, and the parts discount is incredible.

Thanks to all who've suggested alternate sources. Also discovered that Victoria British not only does Z-cars, they do RX-7's as well. Woo-hoo! And yes, it only rattled when the AC was on. Anyways, I'm going to find/mooch/rip-off a copy of the FSM for the 7, so the NEXT time something craps out I can do it right. Haynes is good, but you can't beat the factory manuals. Thanks again, folks!
