setting the timing?

hey all i have always heard to put it on te L1 plug wire and turn the cas till the yellow mark lines up with the pointer at idle to set the timing. is this coorect? now i know that the pic may change the colors a little but with me standing right over it in person both of those marks look white to me. so my question is whihc one do i set it to? next question(this is a just/good to know thing meaning it hasnt happened yet) say that i turn the cas all the way to one sid eor another and cant get it to sit on the correct line on the puley. what do i do? thanx for any help and info ahead of time

The one on the right in the pic is the yellow mark, the left is the red. Line the leading plug up to the yellow, trailing should line up with the red.

If the turning the CAS doesn't get it to line up, you have stabbed it WAY off. Pull out the CAS and make sure the dimple on the gear matches up to the line on the body of the CAS. Stab it in from there, keeping it from moving, and it will be fine. Then fine tune it w/ a light.

Looks like someone has painted them both with white paint to make them clearer.

Make sure you ground the initial set coupler before you check/set the timing and remove it afterwards.

I have a question. How come when i do my timing and put the timing light on L1 i get the YELLOW right on the money but when i switch to T1 its in between the yellow and red just like the picture above.

ALso my L2 and T2 are 180 degrees off. Is this normal. How do i get T1 on the red mark?.. Wouldnt turning the CAS move the L1 off its mark??..

I am running E6K so 0ing the timing is very important.

the E6k is a whole nother story... line up the leading.

what you need to do if you want it to match is adjust your split timming. you can do that with the haltech in the software. stock is 20 degrees apart. if yours is in the middle. that means yours is probably set to 10 instead.

if you set it to 20 it would line up. but there is probably no need to do so. just ignor it. if the map came from a good source it's probably set ok.

Im having trouble with my timing also,i adjust L1 to 5 degrees advance on yellow mark. Then when i put the light on T1 i get the red mark lined up on 5 degrees advance also.If i move the CAS to get T1 to line up at 20 degrees advance, its gonna throw off L1,correct?Im thinking maybe its my timing light.I just bought a new one and its a summit racing brand with the vaccum advance ****.Please help i dont understand how it would even run if both L&T are firing at 5 degrees advance?

Both leading 1 and 2 should fire on the yellow mark. T1 should fire on the red mark, T2 should fire 180 deg away from T1 (you shoulden't even see a mark on the pulley when it's on T2)
