Question Thermostat, 1990 FC3C, n/a , whats up with the specialty gasket?

Lost my thermostat today on car, called parts store we do business with, they deliver, and when I removed old one, there is an almost hard silicone gasket on the outer ring of thermostat. Its grooved, so that it will seat, but why?

Did they screw up and make housing to big? Parts store had no idea, obviously, and couldn't get to Mazda before close, so had to use old one. What's the point?

Ideas? I have never seen this on any commercial, or private vehicle. Weird.

Its an o-ring. Lots of cars use them. They used b/c they offer faster changes that require no surface scraping, which risks damage.

Don't use a parts store thermostat.

If you actually search like you claim you do, you would know why to only use Mazda thermostats.

scathcart, Ill let you have that shot, but if you read, side of road, they delivered what I needed now. I do use Mazda parts, and before posting, just got off mazdatrix, and all they say is thermostat with O-ring. I was asking why? You answered, and thank you, appreciate the quick info.

And when the dealership opens at 7:00, I will be first one there. 7 dollars for a piece of mind, ****, I would have paid 50 for parts crap, just to get by without losing the engine.

Thanks again, scathcart, appreciate it.

Gotta love this. Went to get thermostat, not in stock, 2 - days. " Is O-ring included? "
Not real sure, 2.95 Ill make sure we have one, parts guy says. " Price, I say? " 30.00, for both.

"Deal, what temperature is that rated for?" Let me check, he says. Computer doesn't say.
"Can you check , so I don't get the wrong one?" We will know, he said, when it arrives. It is stamped right on it. And then he replies, was that a convertable?

I reply-"Only when the top is down." Scratches his head. Oh, that was a joke , your a funny guy. I said to him jokingly, " Since I prepaid for the part, installation is included in the price, right?"

No its not, we have to charge for that. I reply, " Well, give me a price for the part and installation, since I paid for the part already, and just the part?"

1.5 hrs labor, special this week, 85.00/hr, and 39.95 for thermostat. So 170.00 labor, 39.95 for the thermostat, plus tax.

"You're kidding right?" Gasket included, he says. Can you leave it here overnight?

ANYONE HERE WANT TO BECOME A PIMP? CAUSE I MIGHT AS WELL HAVE SOMEONE WATCHING WHILE IM GETTING SCREWED.

Now I know why you hate dealerships so much. And no, I will get it on Saturday, for 30.00 and install myself in 8.2 minutes, O-ring and all.

Hope you all got a kick. PEACE THE DOG

I should bitchslap you for evening thinking about letting a dealer change it! It's a thermostat, it takes all of 3 minutes to change! That's an awful expensive too, I think I paid $14 for mine at the stealership.

Easy RaT, I'd have my 6 year old nephew change before the dealership. My point, they rape, steal, and still don't know ****. 30 bucks if I do it, 39.95 if they do it. ? plus labor of course. And people actually think its a deal. I'll fly to any of the knoweldgeable folks here town first, car strapped on my back, before I'd let them put gas in it.

One more for you: 595.00 for window regulator, installation extra. hehehehehe
Thank God for the people here. I'd be stupid-er , and broke-er, if it wasn't for all of you.
