Take another look at the S4 and S5 factory service manuals, and you will see that the resistance values are different for the two AFM's. Something like that may work if you also add some pots to trim the values, but I'm not sure if it would be worth the trouble.

One more vote for the Haltech (or whatever brand of standalone EMS you like).

OK, sure. Cost comparison:

Haltech = arm, leg, *******, first born child.

S5 AFM = $100.

I'd spend 100 bones for a little more air flow. But that's why I asked if anyone had done this. I was told by a forum member a while back that it wouldn't work.

Here is some promising numbers of an N/A project car, with the AFM ditched.

http://www.revolutionrotary.com/racecar.htm

I asked them what they meant by "Mazda mass air" and they said, "just a standalone system". I was hoping they found a cheap solution.

That's pretty impressive for an auto to run low 15s. I wonder what they woulda dyno without the ems. Towards the bottom, they mentioned the price of $995 for the computer, so it's not cheap by any means.

Carby and distributor.

Do they still make VPC's? Did they ever make one for RX-7s? As I recall they cost in the neighborhood of $900 so you might as well just get a Haltech anyway...

Megasquirt EMS(under $150 diy kit) sounds pretty interesting for replacing our AFM and a few of our members are about to install it in their first gens; lets keep our fingers X.

Hehehe, I think you are overestimating the costs. You can pick up a Haltech E6K for a little over $1,000. I don't think a salvage yard would charge much for an S5 AFM, but finding one may be difficult. You can probably get an S5 AFM for free if you can find someone who has recently converted their S5 to a standalone EMS and doesn't need the AFM anymore. Then you just need to spend a lot of time and effort with a multimeter, as well as a few bucks on potentiometers at Radio Shack, and figure out how to emulate the S4 AFM signal with the S5 AFM. The scales may be different, which would require an electronics guru to make a proper circuit board, but I am pretty sure that it would work properly eventually. However, if you spent the same amount of time working at McDonalds a few weekends, you would make enough money to buy a Haltech.

Another thing to remember is the the S4 ECU is slooooow. Even if you upgrade the AFM, you are still stuck with a pig of a computer.

It says the EMS was $995. Microtech maybe? Anyone? Bueller?

I think this Megaquirt might be something to look into for us N/A FC owners. I emailed them with any info on rotary powered vehicles. I will let you guys know when I get a response.

MegaSquirt

I am getting ready to install it on my GSL-SE. I've already built it, just have to assemble the harness and go pickup new sensors.
It eliminates the AFM and has an onboard MAP sensor.
