Unknown AC part?????
was there a special tube made for the base model cars that did not come with AC, that would connect the blower motor to the main distribution tube? I have finaly removed the evaporator (sp.?) from under the dash and now there is a huge gap betweent the blower and the rest of the HVAC system. For now I have patched in a piece of dryer ducting with some duct tape which seems to work preaty well. Without the AC evaporater in there it actually blows a lot harder than before. But I'm guessing that the cars that did not come with AC had a special connection there. If so I will get my hands on one somehow. So if anyone with a base model out there that knows what I'm talking about can go look that would be great. You should be able to just look under the dash right behind the glove box.
On a side note; the evaporator thingy weighs about 15-20 pounds so if you have removed your AC I would suggest removing this piece also since it is no longer doing anything except blocking the blower motor from moving more air to the heater. It is simply removed by taking out the glove box and panel under it and unlatching the evaporator section, unscrewing like 3 10mm nuts, and pulling it out. It is kinda tricky to get it to wiggle out due to the hoses running into the engine bay, but it will eventualy come out. And be sure to plug up the holes so you don't die from deadly underhood gases.
forgive the spelling errors, i'm sneaking at work!

You did spell evaporator right, and you even called it the right thing .
Yes, there was a duct that went from the blower motor assembly to the heater core - I've seen it documented. But, I've NEVER seen an FC with no air conditioning - most cars had the AC installed by the dealer or the port, since most people won't buy a car without AC.
You might be able to find the part number and track down the part, but your approach is probably the best. As long as it doesn't leak and holds up to the air pressure, that's all it needs to do.

It seems to be working fine. But I hate to have things "rigged" up in the car. And I consider any use of duct tape other than race day as "rigged." I was surprised by how much more airflow there was once that large restriction was removed. I bet the 7 will see a little more street time this winter.
But I guess I could try the dealer, but they probably want more than it's worth. But I swear there were people on here who said there cars came factory without AC? It was my assumption that all base models had no AC; but I am usualy wrong.

Might want to try fabbing a duct out of sheet aluminum - you could probably make one that was pretty sweet looking quite easily. Then use the stock clamps to clamp it onto the heater core and blower assemblies - that would be sharp.
I have a feeling more non-AC RX-7's will be in VERY cold climates. But, in general, non-AC cars aren't common - I don't think I've ever even seen a picture of a car with no AC *stock*.
Not to mention the dealers typically go ahead and install AC on cars - they can mark up the price quite a bit and make a good sized profit easily. There's a lot of incentive there, and the buyer sees that as a benefit. I wouldn't buy a brand-new car with no AC, would you?

I have 2 88 SE and both have AC
Maybe the 86 Base or the 87 models were more prone to not have AC from factory, but my two "base" 88s have AC, and both worked great last summer.
Mine puked after storing it all winter. The compressor is shot. My spare car has a good one though!
I will see if I can find the part # for you though. Back later.
