Teaching my son how to rebuild his own ****
My lil brother just started his project and I thought Id share since i never really post here on the 2nd gen section.
I bought him the car a year ago cuz it was cheap and he wanted to learn how to work on cars and man has he learned. Nearly everything that can go worng on this car has and know its the engine
Hes only 16 but is pretty smart for his age.
here are some pics

Buy your brother the rebuild dvd as a late xmas present. My father had the vhs when i was like 13. It maybe boring and slow but you do learn a fair amount from watching it. Glad i been around rebuilding engines since i was like 10.
EDIT: Looks to have been rebuilt before? After the tear down let us know what you think went wrong with the engine.

You need a rebuild DVD and you need the shop manual (easily available)
best advice I can give you:
1. Clean everything very thoroughly, especially the seal and coolant o ring grooves
2. hold the coolant seals in with Crisco (the white stuff in the blue tin). petroleum jelly will make them swell
3. check your clearances and make sure everything is in spec. check for free movement of the side and corner seals so nothing gets stuck
4. check the end play on the e shaft just like the FSM says
5. pack the oil pump cavity with vaseline, it will help the car build oil pressure on startup
6. lubricate all your housings and everything with engine oil, but don't go overboard with petroleum jelly or any other grease. it just makes a big mess and also results in more crap burning off
