tb mod question #3836

is there any way I can tell if a prier owner did the tb mod on my car? I just started reading about the mod and read how most people had to let their cars run for a minute or two before it would start idling. Well......Thats what my car does to and I was woundering why my car does this? Thanks. Ps I don't know if I would trust my mechanic skills enough to do this mod I was woundering if there is anyone who does this mod and sells it? THanks.

your thermowax and secondary throttle plate would be missing.

Look at the TB, (on a TII, you must remove the TMIC) and see if it has 3 sets of rotaters. The rotaters are connected to the throttle cable, so follow the throttle cable to see what I am talking about. When you find the rotaters, you will notice that there are either 3 rotaters per side of the TB (in a triangle shape, with one at the top, and two at the bottom), or just 2 rotaters. If there are only two, then the TB mod has been done!

I do not believe anyone on this forum is doing the TB mod, but I know BDC on teamfc3s.org is doing the mod (also included is some major porting and polishing of the TB) for $150 I believe. I had him do mine a few months ago, and it looks AWESOME!!! If you are really looking to get a better flow of air for your rex, do this mod. Especially, if you have a FMIC and a custom elbow adapter to the TB. The porting of the TB drastically reduces the turbulence of the intake air, making the IC elbow much less restrictive.

the only way to really know is to take it a apart which would a little bit of a pain in the ***, it just makes the throttle more responsive and maybe a few hp

The TB mod does a few things:

Makes the car idle too low when cold.

Makes the throttle more responsive, but that can also cause the car to bog if throttle is stomped.

Removes a heat source from the intake (thermowax)

Removes a slight restriction from the throttle body

Allows the opportunity for porting / smoothing the TB

Can cause vacuum leak if done incorrectly

Removes a bunch of clutter from the outside of the TB

It's easy to tell from the outside. The thermowax may not have been removed, but the linkages for the #2 secondary throttles will be missing, and there'll be a plugged hole where the shaft was.

This TB is on an NA.
The TII is kinda similar, but flipped left to right.
You can see the blue sealant in the shaft plug on this one.
