Hello,

first off, sorry for bringing that old thread back, but I have the same issue and did not want to open a new thread.

What happend:

Doing a rebuild on an S5 TII, had it ported almost done ...
Turbo needs rebuild too, lots of shaft play

My issue:

I cant get that d**n turbine housing off, compressor housing is already off, that was a piece of cake.
There are 2 bolts under the oil feed and return flanges, they wont come out completly, if you ever had a S5 turbo in your hands you know what I mean.

Is there a trick ??

Other question:

Where is the difference in a full rebuild kit and others ?
What rebuild kit do I need when I want a full kit, are there any part nr or compatible types ?
I am new to turbos so I am asking, been searching for almost 1 hr and cannot find a proper rebuild howto, closest was this one:
(turbo howtos infos seems to be a rare breed)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I2CwBwrdnvA

I dont know if a T3/T4 is compatible to the HT18 ...

Help is greatly appreciated.

Regards
Steven

It can be kind of like a puzzle.... you gotta figure out which bolt to unscrew, how much and when to go to the next one.

Rotate the turbine housing so that the screws are not blocked.

This was my first rebuild as well , but as long as your used to figuring stuff out, it is easy to understand.

For rebuild kit, go with Gpopshop T3 carbon seal kit. I went wiht the basic kit. They are the only one who has that carbon seal that our turbos use.
http://gpopshop.com/garrett-t3-t4-t3t4-kits-2

I did not go with the full rebuild kit because I doubt the new bolts, brackets etc will fit the ht18.

I turned my turbo into a hybrid but the rebuild parts are the same. If you want to see about building a hybrid check out my thread
https://www.rx7club.com/2nd-generation-specific-1986-1992-17/building-budget-hybrid-turbo-ebay-t04-parts-921510/

When you take the turbine housing off, if your turbine wheel looks like the pic that MDD0101 posted, mine looked the same and the turbo shop that balanced it said that was ok.

Great !

thanks for the input.
I was planning to reuse the compression and turbine wheel if they are not damaged,
as far as I can tell yet they should be ok but I can only tell when it comes apart.

That turbine housing really is a pita to remove.
Still not off, working since 3 hrs on it.

I am just rebuilding the whole engine for free for a friend and I did not want to send the turbo off for rebuild.
Damn expensive here if your lucky enough and find a shop thats willing to do it...

We are not cheaping out on things by any means but changing parts on a turbo cant be that complicated.
Sending of to germany or uk for balancing might be ok but 600+ $ for rebuild is no go...

Will post a few pics tomorrow of the work done so far.

You need to use the 2 bolts that are under the oil flanges to "jack" the turbine housing off of the CHRA. Work slowly, and go back and forth between the two so it comes off evenly. Once the housing breaks free, you can rotate it to fully remove the bolts if it's still a problem.

Thats exactly how I did it !
In addition I used a torch to give the housing a real good heating

After that it came right off, using the 2 bolts under the oil feed/return to jack it up.
Rotate it, and loosen the bolts completly remove housing.
