tach & speedometor dont work

Okay i went to start my car and it started fine. but then right after it started the car died. so i attempt to start the car again but it wont. it sounds like it is flooded. so i pull the egi fuse out and i crank the car a couple times. then i put the fuse back in. and WAL-LA! starts right up! and there was some white smoke for a little bit but went a way. but i noticed when i did this that my idle went down to nothing but the car was still running. recently the dash lights went out and now the the tach and the speedometor don't work! what is wrong? help me out! tell me why they don't work. oh by the way that's how my dash lights went out too. i started the car then it immiedeitly died and then the dash went out.
thanks to everyone in advance!

May be you blew a fuse. I would just start looking for blown ones.

i just read about something similar on a volkswagon forum. Apparently its common in those cars. And in my cabriolet, which i'm trying to sell... the odometer and gas gauge don't work acurately

the connection for the speedo is mechanical, so a fuse won't solve that. If there are no blow fuses, then the connection for the tach may be bad. It gets the signal from the trailing coil.

Get under the car, and take a look. The speedo cable screws into the transmission. They sometinmes come loose and fall out. If you are lucky, it didn't drag on the road ******* it up for good. If it did - time to visit a scrap yard for a new cable!

If you see that the cable IS attached properly to the transmission, then make sure it is properly plugged into the back of the instrument panel. It's held on by a weak plastic clip the is prone to failure. Those are the two things to check first - Good luck!

I've found that if my car floods and i pull the EGI fuse, the tach wont work. Fix= shut of car for a few seconds then restart. Tach should work fine. Can't help you on the speedo though.
