depends..some Supras can use the N/A AFM.Some dude bought one for that specific purpose.
if you have a S5 you may be able to change to a Cosmo AFM.(see ARGHX's thread, I think)

S4's have AFM's. S5's have MAF's.

Which sensor are we talking about here.

Why?

Get the maf/afm that is right for your car. They sell for like $50.

Not worth the potential issues.
Don't be that guy.

No.
S4's have afm's.
S5's have afm's.
No rx7 ever came w/ a maf.....unfortunately

Also, the cosmo AFM (n390) will not idle (w/ 550 prairies at least) on an s4 ecu , or an rtek for that matter due to the fact that there is no idle adjustment capability. It will run , but it is too lean at idler and stalls.

Now I'm confused.

Here's what I found under Airflow Meter Sensor on wikiwikipedia:
The vane (flap) type air flow meters (Bosch L-Jetronic and early Motronic EFI systems or Hitachi) actually measure air volume, whereas the later "hot wire" and "hot film" air mass meters measure speed of air flow.
So isn't the "hot wire" a mass airflow sensor and not an airflow meter?

S4

S5

And there isn't a "hot wire" in either one of those units. Don't let the shape fool you, the s5 is merely a cone-style AFM as opposed to a flapper door style.

Arghx has a thread on here w/ airflow #s between the different AFMs, it also has cutaway views of their operation and technical papers on the subject. I would link it, but I'm on my phone and that's too much work.

Short story: there is a cone in a tube, that cone has a spring (of a known resistance) behind it such that the further the cone is pushed into the tube, the greater the volume of air is registered. ....far from a maf, but still better than the s4 crap meter.

Just look at the throttle cable, and think of the cable is the "incoming air/force", it pull(push) the clip that's attached to a spring.

the AFM works almost the same way.

The FC afm is unfortunately the crem de la crem, of antiquated air metering technology.

Lots of other cars can see gains by swapping in an fc afm (supra, mr2, miata etc) but most any vehicle w/ real performance potential had already ditched the afm by the time the fc came along.
