symptoms of a dying differential?

What are some symptoms of a differential that is getting close to dying or on its last legs?

If you can hear a louder than normal wirring noise from the back, especially during deceleration.

Also you can jack up a rear tire & turn it back & forth to feel & hear the driveline backlash.

Metal flakes (sparkles) in the diff oil would be bad.

You will also be able to check the wheel bearings & CV joints for slack & noise when it's on the jack.
