Symptoms of a Bad Universal Joint?

The car squeaks rhythmically when going in reverse at low speeds and gradually increases in frequency as speed increases. It almost sounds like a spring compressing and decompressing against rubber or something. Also, sometimes when I put it in gear (it's an automatic) there is a loud clank. Thinking ill do what buttsjim suggested https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.php?t=517657. I'll also check the brake pads for any rubbing though, I think the brakes are fine and there are no noticeable grooves in the rotors. It may be important to note that my brake light on the idiot cluster goes on and off intermittently which I thought was due to my parking brake having to be pulled up so far to work. Maybe the parking brake is dragging?

Any thoughts?

i have just replaced my driveshaft which fixed a bunch of problems. turns out my ujoint was atually broken. i had weird squeak noises in 1st and 2nd gear, bad vibrations while driving, metallic crunching/grinding noise during 3rd or 4th gear, and a few other things i cant remember.

have you taken the driveshaft off to check the joints? check to see how your parking brake is set. you might need to tighten it or replace the cable i think.

You don't have to take the driveshaft off to check the u-joints. Just grab hold of it near each joint and push/pull on it...if there is any play, get new u-joints, if not look somewhere else.

You cannot replace the U-Joints on a stock FC driveshaft. You must replace the entire driveshaft. I actually need a driveshaft myself. Lots of play/vibration : (

Actually, if you look at the thread that the OP included in his first post, you'll see that you can replace u-joints on the factory driveshaft...just takes a bit more effort than a normal u-joint.

if it squeaks from the mid-under car while in reverse you can almost guarantee the u-joints are dry and rusty and about to go into thermal meltdown.

sure you can, you do need to take it to a driveline shop for replacement though. the stock FC u-joints are staked to the shaft and have to be machined out and the driveshaft rebalanced afterwards. cost is generally around $150 for a rebuilt driveshaft with replaceable u-joints. you can attempt to do it on your own but ideally this is something that should be professionally done for best results versus saving a couple bucks.

^ I learned something! I'm waiting to pick up a t2 rear end and shaft, have the t2 trans. my na front diff mount is sheared right off and both u joints are not the best. still drives with a little vibration at 50mph+ but why bother getting it fixed when I plan on swapping right? The t2 shafts need to have the same thing done to make the u joints replacable right?

@FC_fan: Yeah, I'm pretty sure the U-joints are staked in on the T2's as well. I wouldn't spend the money on it if you're about to replace it with all turbo parts (soon). Just do it once with the turbo driveshaft and be done with it. It probably wouldn't be worth it anyway if you resold the N/A driveshaft. Just hope it doesn't get damaged in the meantime.

@Karack:Thanks, I know it should be professionally done but the driveline shop around me charges $250 (about the price of a new driveshaft) to replace the joints. Anyone know of a good/cheap driveline shop in GA?

Thanks for the pricing tip Karack, found a place a little further away that charges about $150. That other shop was a rip off.
