Swap Problems
Swap Problems
I recently swapped the motor and 5 speed from an '86 base into my '88 GXL. I have everything installed and wired up properly. I had to swap a few minor things out between the motors such as injectors because I didn't pull the harness out with the motor. I know I have at least 1 leaky injector that may have caused the engine to flood, but after going through the unflooding procedures, it still wont start. Im getting plenty of fuel and spark, but when I try to crank it, it just turns over compresses and dumps a small amount of fuel out of the exhaust manifold. The gas in the tank is definitely bad (been sitting for about a year) so I plan on draining it out and starting on a fresh tank, just figured I'd get a jump start on the post. Any advice is greatly appreciated.
The *new* engine could be BAD.
Or you could install a fuel cut switch and have the switch to OFF as you try to start the engine.....to deflood the engine and still maintain SPARK. Pulling EGI fuses disables spark when deflooding. Sucks.
Or if two people are working together, have the other person pull the fuel pump connector apart. Spray starter fluid into the intake duct prior to the afm for two seconds or less. Try starting the engine. IF the engine catches the other person is ALERT and will put the fuel pump plug back together in an instant to keep the engine running.
Dump the old gas.

Valid point, but if you knew what kind of person I was when it came to taking things apart for the first time there would be no question. I probably checked everything more times before I took it apart than most do throughout the entire process.
I'm the same way... Right now my entire car is torn apart and parts labelled and bolts are in baggies with sharpie on them. If I'm not working on a part, its in its place. Might be a bit ****, but... big projects tend to get disorganized fast.

Double and triple check everything against the FSM.
