Sudden Compression Loss

87 gxl, 117k, bought 1 mo. ago.

tried to start this morning, hit the key, about 2revs of normal crank sound, then all compression disappeared ! not a lick of compression resistance.

I'm curious, if I set the cruise (5spd) at about 30mph in 4th, some type of valve opens and closes to maintain a level engine speed. reminds me of a jake brake type sound ala diesel semi. could this be stuck open ?

Car has been running fine, as far as I can tell. (my first rotary experience.)

Can't imagine tossing seals in both chambers simultaniously, anybody have any suggestions?

rootsgroup,

What makes you think you compression is low? You could also be describing lack of fuel or clogged air intake.

Can we get some more symptoms?

Thanks

I'll try to describe the cranking sound, its just a steady whine with no compression "bumps" as there had been a moment before. None whatsoever.

I had my son operate the key while I watched the acces. drive (everything's turning), listened closely to the pipes and I hear this "pof" sound as it turns over. Let it turn over not very long and you can smell fuel.

I had pulled it into the garage for a wash job yesterday evening and it ran fine. So the clogged intake deal I'd guess to be unlikely.

I can diag. about anything under the sun on a reciprocater (I've built many) but am very green on the rotary...

Thanks.

Could just be flooded. Try pulling the fuel pump fuse and starting the car. After a few tries put the fuse back in and try.

This sounds exactly like what jus happened to mine, and i have run out of ideas. I have done everything under the sun for clearing a flood, carb is clean an recently rebuilt. Compression tests put it at about 30psi im out of ideas and i cant seem to find much of anything on the forum. If theres something or someone out there that can help point me in the right direction.

BTW sorry if this is considered "Thread Jacking" there seemed to be alot of low compression threads out there and i didnt know if i should have made another or not :P
