no offence, but i know speakers, Audiobahn SUX, get JLAudio, a set of 10's should get ya on your way. make sure you have a sealing strip on the bins and that they have NO RATTLES in them.

I'm sorry but JL audio sucks. I'm not going to get into a flame war here but there not all that great. The w7 is that great for the price either. Audiobahn isn't the best either but if thats what he wants then hope he likes it.

I was thinking about putting my solobarec square 8" in there. As it is, I have 6x9's in there and the sub mounted right behind. Tell me how it sounds, and how exactly you're doing it (where are you mounting the amps?) That's awesome, thanks.

I'm mounting the amp in sort of the same style as the sub... 4 boards for support all around then just a top board carpeted and mount the amp... pretty simple... i'll get pics of it when i get that done to

Speakers

I dont like Audiobahns at all, I have only heard a few sets of them, so im not the biggest expert on that brand. JL's arent my fav either, but they are good and do have a reputation behind them. I run 2 Boston Pro series off an Alpine V12 800W. They sound pretty unbelieveable. I am a boston fan, i think that thier home audio could use a little help but their car audio is my fav. I run 5 1/4 components Rally series in the front and RM9's in the back. Also off a V12 600W 4x. The box was in a previous car of mine that had a hell of a lot more trunk space, so at this point ive got pretty much nothing back there. I am planning on building a custon box that utilizes the bin and the spare to get some room. I figure with intelligent driving and AAA full coverage I wont have cause to use the donut (I hope). Neway, less rambling more posting. BTW, I do believe, IMHO that the green neon is definately rice.

I did a few custom jobs on some rx-7's back when I worked at a local stereo shop. It might not be as pretty as leaving the storage box and putting a box in there- but what we did was to do a fiberglass storage replacement and mount the sub from underneath the new lid. Worked fine and sounded decent - but had too much airspace and too short of a throw for bigger subs.

And as for brands, some might be built better than others - but if someone really wants to, they can make anything sound good. It just takes time, money, and patience. I went with Alpine Type-R just because they don't require much to sound good.

Im gonna have to agree that JL ownnnz audiobahn. my audiobahn sub blew 4 days after i got it.. it didnt sound bad, but not near as good as a JL. there RMS rateing is weak. but i do understand the money situation.. they are def a low price sub. i guess they are probably worth what you pay for them, but they dont even compare to JL. I think anything in that bin is gonna sound like crap though.

I like mine, I have heard/made the bin box's and this is by far the best place for them, with the transfer function off the back window, it responds much better than any bin box....But I could care less about weight, my car scoots with it in just fine ...its easy to remove on track day....Its taken out now for the roll cage...box is for sale.....

heres what i did

i have an se and lack the bins, so i decided to take a different approach...

i wanted to build a hidden enclosure so that i wouldnt be wasting all my hatch area with the large overweight box that i had from years ago which had been sitting in the basement. the old setup was two mtx road thunder 3000s. i wanted to go with a single 12 setup and the sony xs-l121ps was cheap and sounded decent at the store

i went to home depot to get some mdf, i was going to use 3/4 like everyone recommends but i wanted to keep the weight down so i got some 1/2 inch, i know its not going to be as tight, but it will save a few lbs. if its flexing way too much ill add some gussets or switch to 3/4

the next step was designing the box, the sub called for 1 cu/ft so i wanted to get close to that, as well as have the box as small as possible, after measuring the space i had to work with, i settled with 14x14x11, which produces the internal dimentions of 13*13*10 which equates to 1690 cubic inches or .978 cubic inches close enough for me.

i traced out the shapes with a square and cut out the panels using a circular saw. after everything was cut, i used a angle clamp to get all my corners to 90, then i attached the top and the bottom, before cutting out the terminal hole or the speaker hole. all seams were sealed with wood putty then with silicone.

i then used a saber saw to cut out the speaker and terminal hole, and then i could seal the last few seams. the terminal also got a coat of silicone to make sure it seals tight.

the box is assembled with 1 1/4 inch course and fine (alternating) drywall screws. i used about 20 per side or about 120 for the whole box, it should stay tight.

the terminal is from radio shack and is gold plated, not bad for 5 bucks. the wire is just generic 12 gauge speaker wire.

i wanted to compare the weight from the old and new boxes, so i weighed them

old busted: 48.0 lbs

new hotness: 25.5 lbs

so i shaved 22.5 lbs, and moved it alot lower in the car, more towards the middle of the car as well, which will help keep the balance better. im happy with that. the box should fit nicely in my rx7, it will go behind the passenger seat, because i have the sport model it didnt come with storage bins, just a large empty void, the amp is mounted behind the drivers seat. see the picture for details.

well im an idiot, it was too big so i went back to square one, and redesigned the box, in the end after a few hours of measuring i decided the only shape that would fit was a house shaped box, i lost some cubic inches but instead i added some polyfill which effectivly slows down the air in the box, making it behave as a larger box... i may even convert to an isobaric setup which will give me better frequency response with such a small box.. or maybe an infinity perfect 12.

anyway ive nicknamed the box "the birdhouse" and if you look at the pics youll see why.
anyway after building the box i caulked it all with dap acrylic caulk... this stuff is the best.. i get it in the squeeze tube, because its easy to get into tight places unlike a caulking gun, and you never need all that much. anyway the box fits nice and snug. as soon as the caulk sets ill turn it up.

also, by removing some of the wood, the box weight was decreased to 22.5 lbs. so i ended up getting rid of 25.5 lbs out of the *** of the car.

it sounded real good, very tight, even with the carpet covering the sub it moves alot of air. however i may try to come up with a discrete way of exposing the sub.. it really doesnt matter though the carpet is very porous. i am very pleased, some of the fiberglass is resonating a little so i think im going to add some dynamat. i also have to give the outside of the car the once over to see if anythings shaking.

I have 2 JLAudio 12 W6's running from the 500/1 amp which will be upgraded to the 1000/1 amp. It sounds incredible. Although i do have a durango, but i love those subs. I dont have it all setup in my truck yet (sorry if i made it seem like i do) but my friend has 1 12 W6 with an 800 watt amp running it in his little hatchback and its loud as all hell-o. He has a stock component system right now so you can barely hear anything but bass, which i will be running Boston Z6's in the rear for the highs, and another set of Bostons that are good for Mids with a 300 or 350/4 for an amp. The new W6's, not the old ones which are equivalent to the new W3's, are awesome subs. Im not quiet sure on what im gonna do about a box, seeing as thought i dont have uch room at all in the back and im not removing my 3 row. Any ideas??

yea, i had two JL 12" W3s in my 96 ford probe (boom!#$ wrecked and my **** was jacked! so they cut me a check for all receipts i had -- ~$860. i didnt have ONE receipt for one of the amps; Kenwood, pawn shop). that car hit. like said before, don't confuse loud with clean. oh, and these were loud, too. only dirty sound was the car rattling to pieces. had two 10" MTX 6000s in my integra gsr, but i remembered my JLs, and thy were missed.

now onto the RX7. you guys crazy? finally in life i have what i can call a sports car; why would i put loud cement blocks in there? i don't even have speakers in the rear on the strut towers.

good luck with your projects, though.

I have "extra" torque so the extra 90 LBS isnt a concern to me No worse than a passenger, and you can remove it on track days

man, i remember how heavy my box was! i couldn't lift it by myself easily at all! 'course, it was a single box with 2 JL 12" W3s. i never weighed it, but if i couldn't lift it, it'd HAVE to be at least fifty pounds!! heh, extra torque/horsepower?? never! use every bit. i don't hate on people with systems, thats why i added "good luck" had to show sportsmanship.
what i do hate is people who pretend their car is fast (gotta fit every trend, right?), but really just have a system, then accessory add-ons. you know what i'm talking about. every possible combination except a built engine. oh well, as long as people think they're cool.
