stupid question

i know question has to have been asked a billion times but will a cone filter with out a cold air box create a noticable difference in power? im poor and this is the only mod i could afford at the moment, so i just ordered all the stuff with some christmas money.

also, you crafty people out there who have made nice cold air boxes, how hard/expensive is it to make one if you have no experience cutting metal/welding/riveting etc.? anyone wanna make another one and sell it to me?

Noticable? maybe. But I wouldn't pound on it. Heat is bad. With just a cone you have heat and lots of it. You can probably make a box for it for a couple of bucks.

I think it was audiofight or something like that that made some out of sheet metal. I had one made of CF but I don't really like heat shields. They are worthless to me.

I dont think you will feel anything by adding it unless your stock filter is clogged. If you fabbed up a cold air intake then you might be able to, but by itself it probably will not add alot.

thats why I made something that you DO feel.

You should try a stab at a true CAI. But don't expect it to be cheap if you go with a big pipe.

Mebbe there was something wrong with my car, but... I felt a small difference from the cone intake... I seemed to run low on steam around 110mph (6500mph or so in 4th), and now she presses hard to the buzzer at 120mph... don't expect that kind of a result, (trust me I tested my car's top end alot annd it ran out at about 110 every time, and pushes well beyond 120 with the cone), my car is a big fluke.

i only went with the cone because my snorkel was missing and i figured as long as im sucking in hot air i might as well suck in MORE hot air. probobly not very good logic but it looks better anyways.

Best thing to do is to get a K&N stock replacement filter.

This is what I did.

You could have put the filter in now and then build the box later, when it's convenient...

Thanx.

There's a good size opening in there. Blame my shitty camera - it doesn't deal well with low light. Look at PI-airbox-1. See the arrow? The lower half of that opening is blocked from view by the filter.

Btw, all that grey crap (and all other dirt) has since been cleaned off using a power sprayer at point-blank range.

I left the stock intake system in tact, added a K&N filter, and cut about a 5" oval in the front right of the stock top. I then made an oval duct to go directly under the hood opening where the rubber strip resided. Don't know how much it helps, but it was cheap and gets nothing but outside air. I don't drive the car in the rain, but fabricated a cap to cover the end of the duct incase I ever get caught in the rain.
