done take it off. it may not stick back on right if you dont know what your doing. just mask it off with some masking tape and newspaper. go to an auto store or even walmart and ask someone at the counter to help you find your factory paint color code in a spray paint can. you cant just use any old white or it wont match and will be too bright.

take your marker lights off.
clean the trim with some rubbing alchohol.
sand the trim with some 800 gritt sandpaper.
clean with rubbing alchohol again
spray a medium coat of primer over the trim.
let dry for 10 minutes.
spray a thin coat of your color paint.
let dry for 10 minutes.
spray a medium coat of your color pain.
let dry for 20 minutes then remove tape and paper.

shouldnt you put some sort of clear coat over it to protect it afterwards... or is that not necessary?

You can remove the mouldings and paint them. Just be carefull and don't break it or bend it too much. The only bad part is that it will require a bit of work to get them and the car clean and free of the adhesive pad. After it's all painted up, get yourself some more double sided adhesive pad (you may want to ask a body shop what the best stuff to use is) and stick them back on. I believe there are directions on how to remove and reinstall in the FSM.

clearcoat never hurts. But isnt always needed.
Basicaly just depends on wether you want to clear it or not. You should be good either way, if you do clear coat it, it will shine pretty nice so you gotta think of how shiny the rest of the paint is. i used color match spray paint on my mustang years ago and it worked great and looked good up until the day i sold it.

For the love of all that is wholly take them off your car before you paint them. You'll never get good coverage with them on the doors and you'll more than likely get some cheap *** spray paint on your good paint.

Take it from someone who has done just this exact same thing... sort of, I did it while I was repainting my car so the moldings were off anyway... this is the way I would recommend you accomplish it. Take it from someone who repainted thier entire car and knows a thing or two about paint and prep work......and completely ignore that bullshit about going to walmart. Nothing will really stick to plastic unless the plastic is prepped first.

Step one. Remove all the molding.
Step 2 - remove all the adhesive that is left on the back of the molding
step 3 - get some wax and grease remover and a light scotch-brite pad and clean the hell out of the top of the molding that you want to paint
step 4. take very small pieces of double sided tape and lay all the molding out on a board to paint them. The molding with the clips in them you can srew down to this board.
step 5 - apply a plastics adhesion promoter.
Step 6 - shoot the epoxy primer
step 7 - shoo the base. I used Nissan Charcoal Mettalic... it looks great
step 8 - shoot the clear
step 9 - intalation is the reverse of removal.

The clear is great becuase it allows you to WAX AND COMPOUND your molding. I painted EVERYTHING from the molding to the side views, to the windshield molding and hatch. There is nothing on the outside of my car that hasn't been cleared. It looks great.

To those of you who spout your opion as fact....

1. don't buy an 80's car and then bitch about the styling
2. search!! you can swap the trim from the later models with mild modifications.
3. PAINT THEM!
