Shouldn't be that hard to get out. Did the car over heat or lose coolant?

I bet the gasket or gasket goop just melted/fused on. You probably just need to pull harder or pry it with something. The gasket's not that strong. Be sure to scrape off the old seal material (with something that won't scratch metal) before installing a new gasket, gasket sealer and thermostat.

I agree with Eric, even it did get super hot and fused right to the housing, you should still be able to yank it off.

Seriously thank you to all for the advice. I got it off in about 2 seconds. I made the mistake of leaving coolant in the car without running it for months so I want the old coolant out and i'm putting new prestone, distilled water, and water wetter after flushing the entire system. Any more helpful hints on getting the coolant system lime and rust free? When I pulled the t-stat out there was a nice chunk that looked like lime icee. I'm draining the oil tomorrow to check for coolant in it, but i think my coolant seals are fine since they are pretty new. I deserve punishment for neglecting my car for so long. Thanks again!

Tip: When it's time to refill with coolant, fill it as much as you can under the thermostat before you put it in - this will help make sure you don't have as much air under the thermostat. Also, make sure heater is on hot so you flush the heater and hoses too. I have a write up on thermostat replacement (search advanced, thermostat replacment, my name as poster) in this section.
