Ports
I'm not sure how the set up is for vdi, but i think your ports open when the actuators are up. They open as a result of backpressure.
If you wire them to the open position your off the line acceleration will suck. If they are stuck, get new ones.
Mine were stuck open and my off the line time was horrible.
When you say Vdi won't open, are you talking about the cylinderical port that's in the middle of the manifold.
If that's not opening either, my conjecture is maybe the entire system that is operated according to the back pressure is shitting out somewhere. Maybe your air pump is leaking or something?? The air pump is that pully driven thingy-ma-bob that has a hose which is fed back (if memory serves me) right between the two actuators. My suspicion is, if you don't have that air "pumping" pressure correctly, that might be part of the problem.
That is my conjecture.
Good luck.

Just fix the friggin things...actuators are easy enough to get if yours are shot. On an S5, the push to open, rotating the sleeves towards counterclockwise (front) and clockwise (rear).
Just fix it, the car will run like *** with everything wired open.

Uhh... the rods extend UP when OPEN. this should rotate the sleeves so that the opening is into the engine .
They are operated by the airpump and can get stuck closed after as little as TWO WEEKS of non-use. The VDI moves DOWN when attatched to the engine, in car. Also, the airpump.
Getting these bastards unstuck is a REAL PITA. You usually gotta take off the manifold and then you can rotate it by hand. I recomment outting lots of oil around the sleeves and WD-40 on the linking arms. make sure you take it past 5500 RPMs everyday to keep the VDI and 6-ports working
