Stuck at 3,000 rpm.. whats the cuase????

So I was driving my '89 gxl home last night at like 4am... I drove like 1 mile home total... about half way home.. or so I think.. the car just brings itself to 3,000 rpm and leaves it there... like i can drive through all the gears only it just at 3 grand and the car pulls itself... i was kinda being hard on the car.. (a few redline shifts) but nothing out of the ordinary. What would cuase this.. I drove the car to work and kinda messed with the gas alot.. thinking something just might be stuck... whats wrong with my car???? thanks

maybe the BAC is stuck open? about the only thing i can think of that would let the car rev on it's own. unless your throttle cable is cought on something.... take off your intake piping and see if the throttle plates are open more than just slightly. if they are almost closed like they should be then it is probaby the BAC.

definately inspect and lube tb parts as necessary..

check the throttle cable first.. inspect and clean the BAC.. etc as forementioned

another thought - you may have sprung a vacuum leak?

when you say it brought itself to 3k rpm, were to at idle? then it just jumped up? or cruising at 3k then "decellerated" and the throttle stayed at 3k?

when i start the car cold, it will bring it to about 4.5k, than down to 3k, as if it were normally supposed to be like that... im not sure how it happned i was kinda out of it at the time.. but im assuming when i decelerated it just got well stuck at 3k

Where is the bac? what is the bac? and ill check for any vacume leaks.

Thanks for the help...

bac(v) = bypass air control valve

has to do with idle..

maybe one of the throttle plates is stuck? take her apart and have a peek

ok i figured out what it is, but dont know how to fix it.....

There are 2 cables, the throttle cable (which is loose when the cars at like 3g's just sitting there) and than the other cable tha goes to something on thepassenger side of the engine bay right next to the firewall. it simply seems to be pulling to tight.. cuase i can pull the cable back and it wil be idling fine untill i give it gas.. than it sticks again... what is that thing and what should i do to stop it sticking?

umm ... i think you might be in OMP limp mode.
run a code test. and don't drive/run your car until you get this fixed.

use some wd40 and spray the **** outa the line, and let it drip down the tupe that surrounds it. and work the line back and forth(make sure you have the car off). and spary the springs around the throttle controls. jus try to loosen that **** up.see if that works.

how clean is the area? maybe you should take the whole thing apart and jus lube everything, im sure that would work best. but try the other idea to see if that works.

its an s5, so i dont have to check for codes... and if it were in limp mode, wouldent I notice less power?

The area is very clean.... but im going to go attempt at cleaning everything up....
