Stranded, HELP!!

I'm was on a small road trip, like 3 hours. I was driving on the highway about 80ish cruising 5th gear. I downshifted and floored it to have some fun, at about 5-6k rpm I heard a quick pop or something, and lost engine power. I didn't hear any shattering or anything. It cant idle by it self and runs really really rough. Revs up slow, I can still boost about 6psi. When I rev it up and let off, the exhaust will pop alot more than usual

just to give some background I installed an HKS SSQV BOV yesterday. before I installed it, I was boosting 9psi on the stock BOV and after the HKS BOV it automatically lowered the boost to 6psi. Thought it was a little weird.

Anyways, I limped to my destination so I could use the internet I need some insight. thanks.

If anyone is in the Amherst, MA area, and would like to help. my number is 508.333.4352 Thanks.

~Dave

It looks like one of two things.

1: Check out your BOV and hoses
2: Pull the spark plugs and have a look. And have a listen. It could be a blown motor.

Did the exhaust "note" change at all? Does it sound like it's running at 1/2 the RPM the tach says or anything?

The exhaust does sound like its at 1/2 rpm than the tach says. I also hear alot of popping from the exhaust like its backfiring. Most of the time is when I let off the gas and let the engine coast down.

Compression test! A $20 compression tester from autozone will tell you for sure if your engine is blown. The poor man's compression test will most likely work, too.

Or maybe a boost holding hose\pipe blew out a bit?

my top mount intercooler couplings pop off often ... same symptoms

i assume you've looked under the hood though and verified all your hoses are intact?

I looked where I worked on for the BOV, nothing looked like it was popped off. I didnt get a chance to look around the hoses at all angles to see if anything is bursted. I couldn't feel any slits in the hoses. Its dark now, but i will look at it and start taking stuff apart in the morning.

I am so worried that my motor might be blown. Its really freaking me out. I really hope its just something simple.

can your car start up on its own? If you know the sound of your motor well, you should be able to tell the sound of a blown rotor.

The car just sounds like its struggling to run. It can start up on its own w/o me pushing on the gas, Itll initially rev up to 3k for a split second, and idle back down, the stall.

I limped it 180miles home. Checked all the hoses, theyre all connected and looking good. Did a compression test, and the rear rotor has 0 compression. Looks like I need a new motor, i think its about time I get a 13b-re.

thanks for the insight guys.

As soon as he said he downshifted and heard a quick pop, and lost engine power, I knew he blew his engine. That sucks.

That's too bad. How many miles on the motor when it blew? We're at 120K now and worried that we're next and it will probably happen at our first auto-x. I'm trailering the car to Devens just in case.

Do you know who you are going to use for the rebuild? There is a place in Salem named BPR that has come up in the forums but I have no first hand knowledge. We're going to use a place in Sterling, called Enhanced Street Performance (ESP) to rebuild our tranny but I don't know if they would do an engine rebuild (mostly Mitsu's out there). I could dig around for telephone numbers if you can't find them.

Keep your progress posted on this thread so that I can see what you are up to. Good luck!

How many miles were on it... and when you down shifted, did you rev match it? let the wheels spool it up, or over rev it?

I am just curious of what it takes to blow an apex seal, cause my cars got 230k miles on it... and I want to drive it in a safe liveable way.

I'm almost at 89k miles. I had 120+ psi on both rotors before this happened. I dont know why it would just blow like this. It did smoke sometimes, but I believe it was from it running rich.

I always rev match.

Slo Motorsports, how much are they charging you to rebuild the transmission?

SwiftTone, rebuild it yoruself and save............ 89k won't be too bad. The rotor housing will have to be replaced. You can get used ones cheaply. If you can put the Blow off valve on yourself then you can rebuild the motor.

We bought a rebuild kit from Ernst at RX7World for $289. ESP will charge us like $60 or $65 an hour and they estimated around $500 (includes dropping tranny from car, rebuild and reinstall in car).
